Wi-Fi Connection speed Mps Low

I have three laptops in our house, with the router set to 40Mhz on 2.4GHz band on channel 7. Two laptops connect at 150Mps stable but my Sony connects at 150Mps but keeps loosing link every 2~3 mins. If I select 20/40Mhz within the 2.4Ghz band same channel 7, my Sony only connects at 65Mps stable but the other two to laptops only connect at 125Mps they are also stable. I have also checked my Sony WI-FI drivers are up to date, which they are.

I have checked my Wi-Fi signal with inSSIDer all is good no neighbours interference, I’ve also changed channel number from 7 to 1 and to 13 on the 40Mhz setting, all with the same results as above.

I welcome any thoughts / assistance.

Asus=RT-66U
Merlin=374.41

By using Channel 7 you are guaranteed to be interfering and receiving interference from both Channel 6 and Channel 11 which are Control channels.

By using 40MHz channel width you are possibly getting less range and almost certainly less throughput than a clean 20MHz channel width setup might provide (it depends on how crowded and utilized the airwaves are at the time of your testing).

I would try setting the RT-N66U to these settings (leaving all others at defaults).

Remember that connection speed is not what the goal is: actual throughput always trumps higher indicated connection rates.

To ensure that you give the router the best chance of showing what it is capable of, I would do a reset to defaults, manually power cycle it (unplug the AC, wait a couple of minutes and then power it up again instead of Rebooting via the gui) and setup the router manually (do no restore a saved backup).

I would also remove/forget the connections on each laptop too and re-associate them again after the router was fully configured.

With all the above completed, you will either have solved the issues you're having or will be able to concentrate on the real source of the problem.
