Need to link surveillance cam mounted in unattached garage to Modem about 35 yards away. Wifi originates from conventional modem signal and is NOT 5G. The WiFi signal needs to penetrate wall from front of house to the outdoors and then penetrate garage wall to indoor surveillance cam. Is an access point recommended? And if so, will I run into compatibility issues between access point and modem? Do access points need to be hardwired?

Also - any other trouble-shooting issues I should anticipate?

Do you really mean "modem"? Sounds like you're talking about a wireless router. What is the make and model number?

Do access points need to be hardwired?
Access points are hardwired to the main router. Repeaters or wireless bridges on the other hand connect to the main router via Wi-Fi.

What is the wall construction at the house wall ? Same for garage ?

Is there a window that the wireless router can sit in instead of behind a wall ? Same for garage ?

Is the garage powered from the house main electrical panel or does it have its own panel and grounding/earthing rod ?

An outdoor rated point to point AP, powered over ethernet cable, mounted under the roof eave of both buildings, with line of sight between the two should be the most reliable setup if you have to use wireless to link the two buildings.
