Greetings,

Has anyone had success hooking up a DNS-321 to a computer running Windows 2008 Server? Did you have to do anything special to make it communicate?

I'm quite sure it's a W2k8 issue, because I have hooked up my DNS-321 to another PC without any problem. From the W2k8 server, I can ping the DNS-321, I can use easy_search to identify the NAS (after I tell the firewall to allow it), and I can access the web based setup using Opera (I can't access it using MSIE). However, I can't access\mount the share drives by mapping \\[IP]\Volume_1.

Seems like it must be a problem with the windows firewall, but as far as I can tell, I've completely disabled it. I must be missing something.

I tried to work with D-link tech support, who told me "we do not support troubleshooting on any machine that has a Server OS installed regardless of whether or not it is 2008, 2003, Unix Server etc". Well, great.

If you have any suggestions they'd be much appreciated!

AD support for less money

This is an interesting scenario. Are you trying to connect the DNS-321 to the W2K8 server and map the drives just as you would an external device? I ask because I've considered doing the same thing with my domain controller in my home. I'd like an inexpensive NAS like the 321 connected to my W2K3 server (which has roles of File server and Domain controller) and then shared out from there. This should allow AD to see and share the shares by user/group. Thus removing the need for a NAS w/ AD support while still allowing RAID capabilities.

As far as the W2K8 issue... I'm sure they won't help you because you, like me sound like you are trying to save some money and forego the more expensive AD supported model. I wish I had an answer for you, but nonetheless, I'm glad you asked it, I hope we can both get some answers.

Found this on the web. While it may seem "common sense" it may help lead you in the right direction.
