Asus RT-AC56U fw. 380.57

For no apparent reason, my WLAN became partially dysfunctional. Last night, all was well. This morning all WLAN devices were normally connected and functioning but lost communication to any other WLAN device! Restarting WLAN on router fixed everything. To restart WLAN, I changed channel from 6 to Auto (and it remained on channel 6). WLAN means Wireles LAN (aka WiFi) and LAN stands for Ethernet cable.

I am currently testing one 1080p surveillance camera to see if WLAN is feasible. For 10 days now, this camera sits in front of a router and is transmitting over WLAN, signal -36 dBm. All that time, camera was working perfectly over WLAN.

Layout: LAN server (Server -> switch -> Router) saves cameras to the disk. WLAN tablet is a monitor for the cameras. WLAN computer manages network. Phone - WLAN. 3 currently connected WLAN devices are 11n 2.5 GHz, computer is neither. Router is up for 21 days. All the important stuff is on the external LAN switch. Everything is powered from a large UPS.

Problem: none of the 3 WLAN connected devices was able to communicate with the WLAN connected camera! LAN server was able to see the WLAN camera normally all the time. WLAN computer could connect to LAN server. WLAN devices (computer, tablet and phone) were showing all LAN cameras except this one on WLAN. Scanning the network using Wireless Network Watcher, none of the WLAN devices were showing except for my computer (which was used for scan). I repeat: all WLAN devices were connected and worked normally, but could not communicate with another WLAN device; WLAN <-> LAN communication was OK.

I restarted the camera, switched it to the LAN PoE (power) and back, tested its power supply. All was well and in all situations LAN server had connection to the WLAN camera. After any check, router would always do the regular DHCP sequence with my WLAN camera: DHCPDISCOVER(br0), DHCPOFFER, DHCPREQUEST, DHCPACK. Restarting tablet did nothing.

Only after me changing a router channel from 6 to auto (which is also 6):

Feb 16 11:18:14 rc_service: httpd 24763:notify_rc restart_wireless

I got all WLAN devices back to being able to see one another. Funny thing: after this restart, Asus log shows DHCP reconnecting 3 WLAN devices (computer, tablet, phone) but not the camera which works normally!

I would bet it's broadcom stuff (CTF and/or wireless driver) got into a lock-up state in the kernel. Firmware from 372.x series to 378.x series, somewhere in between I've seen similar weird issues on some releases.

If you're desperate to stay on 378.57, can try turning off CTF aka HW NAT under LAN > Switch (second knob). It's now a band-aid solution to every single mysterious issue. You would be better off staying on Merlin 378.55 which is rock solid for me. People report .56 stable too but personally I can't vouch for it as I skipped.

380 branch of code is pretty new. Asus even hasn't released an official version for AC56U yet. Give it sometime to mature. No hurry to be on the latest and greatest.
