Would like to access my home server over the net problem

I am trying to setup my Asus merlin firmware router so I can access my server when I away. I live in a retirement rv park. We still use a hardwired modem hooked to my router but get the following message
"The wireless router currently uses a private WAN IP address.
This router may be in the multiple-NAT environment and DDNS service cannot work in this environment."

Is there a workaround for this. I use no-ip if that makes a difference and always worked until I moved here. Thanks in advance.

Can you provide some more information about your modem, make and model number? Also what type of connection is it, telephone, cable company? Is it a dedicated connection just for you or is it a shared service to other people in the park?

The modem is a Motorola Surfboard SB6141. The internet is through a cable company. I believe it comes in to the resort and they then distribute it to everyone's individual modem. My modem is just for me. Not sure if that is enough info to help.

When you log into your router, right at the top there should be the WAN IP. If its one that commonly used for NAT Routers (192.168.x.y or 10.x.x.x) that is the issue, your cable modem is not passing through the actual public internet IP for the Asus to use.

You can try
  • Accessing the cable modem via a browser and configuring it for passthrough, Typically, you would try access the x.x.x.1 address from a browser. So if your WAN ip is 192.168.0.5, go to a web browser and try 192.168.0.1 -- <wrong>If you are running windows, type cmd into the ask me anything box.. a DOS box will pop up... type ipconfig and the address you want will be the Default Gateway address at the bottom</wrong>

Then, look up docs / posts for your surfboard modem for how to set it up for pass through. In some cases the cable company locks down the cable modem so you can't configure it... this is true for me, I can't change my cable modem... some allow it, some don't
  • If you can't change the cable modem's config yourself, call you cable provider and tell them you are running router behind router and you want your modem provisioned to pass the public IP through to your router. You may have to restart or disconnect / reconnect after they have made the change.

Yup my wan ip is 10.20.5.97 so not passing the actual wan. I will work on it but probably don't have the knowledge to go much farther. If I use no-ips program for windows I can see the actual ip if that helps at all.

You pay your ISP a lot of money to provide you a service. They are providing the media translation device - like cable modem / DSL to Ethernet, they can configure that give you a public IP. Be nice, but don't take "no" for an answer

your cable modem is probably configured so all your devices would connect to it directly, it is doing NAT for all outbound traffic, and it is setup to give DHCP for LAN devices connecting to it.

I think you have to configure the cable modem to bridge mode, that's what I had to do many ages ago when I had cable modem and wanted to use my own router behind it. In bridge mode it will no longer perform NAT or DHCP for LAN devices.
With some modems there may not be bridge mode, but DMZ mode instead like what ATT provides.
