[QOS] Question Regarding Bandwith and QOS Effectiveness

There is no simple answer. Your network, regardless of speed, is either idle or sending a packet. Whether your buffers (upload) or your ISP's buffers (download) are "too" saturated is up to you to decide. Example: A video stream uses 20mbps of your 100mbps connection, which mean you have...

I assume they backport security fixes, which is likely what you are implying is the primary concern when using old code in networking devices.

    I Quit Using pfsense

It's no good for you. I understand that some things "just work" for certain cituations but I think it's dangerous, especially for an influential person, to declare something as "no good" simply because you didn't have a good experience. If you have details (like sfx mentioned) then I can fully...

[SOLVED] Please help with firewall rules for errant daughters devices

Indeed. A favorite response (kinda...) of mine was that they were grandparents of a child who'd lost their parents through drugs or poor care and that the child would literaly go crazy if they assumed the caretakers had taken any action against them, by physically assaulting them. (In that case...

    I Quit Using pfsense

Whether pfSense, or any reputable system, is "high performance" or "better" is hard to quantify. Similarly, it's hard to objectively criticize without some concrete, repeatable examples of failure. I personally chose a FreeBSD-derived OS for networking purposes because I think it has he most...

I really need help with plex!

Either use UPnP if your router supports it, or manually forward the appropriate port (32400?) to Plex, or setup a VPN. Use a service like CanYouSeeMe to confirm that the external port is open.

    I Quit Using pfsense

I thought most stateful firewalls had good support even for things like UDP & ICMP. With pfSense, if I allow outbound DNS it statefully allows the response. If I allow outbound ping it statefully allows the response.

    I Quit Using pfsense

It's a mostly useless post without details about why it happened... Were you using Unbound? Recursive DNS lookups take a bit longer than using 3rd-party DNS servers.

what is that microsd slot inside the RT-N66U for?

I've got an 8GB in mine with no problems. I even formatted & partitioned it within AsusWRT's CLI. IIRC, the limit was 32GB+.

If the AP doesn't support VLANs, can the hEX isolate based on the ethernet ports?

Which app is best for measuring the wifi signal?

I prefer "real world" benchmarks like iperf or simply starting a local file transfer and observing the speeds.

If you could help Tim setup QoS ("bandwidth management"?) I'd be grateful. For me, that's a very important topic for a tutorial to include.

Ubiquiti called out as a fraud

Meh, I assume most ads are BS. If I decided to get mad about the accuracy of a company's claims in their ads I'd probably never buy another mainstream product.

Ubiquiti called out as a fraud

I must ask, how objective are you in this situation? Most of your posts are pro-Mikrotik, so there's obvious bias.

Move the Router Antennas up or down

Yes, because most WiFi antennas are omnidirectional. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omnidirectional_antenna

[Fork] Asuswrt-Merlin 374.43 LTS releases (Archive)

As someone with a ~700 kbps upload, having the ability to finely tune QoS bandwidths is very useful. 102 kbps increments means I might have my bandwidth needlessly constrained by over 10%. With such a measly upload, I want every bit I can get.

Ping to Router vs Ping to Internet - Differences in Latency

traceroute says google.com is ~19 (or ~10 if you exclude "* * *") hops away. At the least, Google seems to be 5 hops beyond my ISP's network.

Ping to Router vs Ping to Internet - Differences in Latency

Maybe... I don't understand anycast or low-level tiering very well. The hosts always end up being *.1e100.net, which seems to be Google's network. The traceroute shows the IPs are few hops beyond my ISP's edge. Also, when I ping my ISP's DNS servers, the results are less consistent along with...

Ping to Router vs Ping to Internet - Differences in Latency

Counter-point: I've been pinging google.com for years and the ping has been incredibly consistent (8-11ms for more than 5 years and always within a millisecond during a given PPPOE/DSLAM session). It's more consistent than any of my ISP's nodes, excluding my first external hop (but that's barely...
