Using AC68U Router with Fibre Broadband

I have an Asus AC68U router which I would like to use with BT Fibre.

I have an old BT vDSL Modem which I previously used in conjunction with my Billion Bipac 7800N to use with Sky Fibre. Do I need to use the same BT Modem (populated with correct logon credentials of course) and have that connected to my Asus router?

Depends what BT brought into your house.
Most likely it's a DSL line, so you'll have to use they vDSL modem. Ideally it should be just a modem (no routing whatsoever on it) and you will be able to connect AC68U with an ethernet cable into the modem.

It's some sort of 'smarthub', modem/router in one box. they provide, which I have no intention of using.

Ideally you should be able to convert it from router into bridge. But that depends on the model and how much effort BT puts into forbidding that option.
Take it one step at a time:
- make sure if they bring you DSL or ethernet.
- if DSL, configure it with whatever equipment they give you and make sure you have internet access.
- than try to see if there's a way to turn it into bridge mode and connect Asus to the modem.

If they are bringing you directly internet, you can just plug Asus and configure it.

It's hard to offer a better advice cause BT is using different setups based on physical line and it adds some more complexity for businesses/home users plus a large number of CPEs they offer.
