Unrelated but I wanted to share my project.

    Outstanding effort and dedication.

Looking for more coverage, Range Extender or use Router?

Since you plan to hard-wire the connection, it is hard to beat the reliability of a plain vanilla access point.

How long does RT-AX86U have left?

As the current 2.4GHz range champion, my AX86 will stay right here in my 125-year-old house with thick walls until it dies.

Which aimesh router will strengthen the 2.4 GHz network?

The sister forum to this one, https://www.smallnetbuilder.com/, has the choices to rank routers by range, by speed, or by overall performance. Choose the parameters most important to you and search accordingly.

Need to replace my RT-AC68P router...suggestions please?

On this forum's close sibling the ASUS RT-AX86U scores the best range.

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.13 / 386.13_2 is now available for AC models

And remember, the latest security patches are much less important for access points and mesh nodes. Maintain good security at the entrance gateway and you will be fine.

Prevent access to ASUS router settings page through Access Point wi-fi connected to router.

I would think a suitable workaround would be a good password for admin access.

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.14 is now available for AC models

I live in a 3-story, 122-year-old, house with thick walls so range is more important to me than speed. Over on the "SNB testing" site the ASUS RT-AX86Um is the current champion, and happens to be the model I bought many months ago. Still works great!

    Release ASUS RT-AC68U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.386_51722 (2024/11/26)

Retired AC68s also make great access points. The heavy lifting is done by the gateway router.

    RT-AC2900 supported by Merlin firmware?

That is correct. Here is the label on the back of mine.

Asus Routers Extension Proper Set-up Using Ethernet Cable

For me the choice for an access point is reliability. Just my opinion, but it looks like mesh networks are still evolving and the bugs are getting worked out. I think the third box would not be a true access point, but a wireless repeater with compromised bandwidth. "Better" always depends on...

Asus Routers Extension Proper Set-up Using Ethernet Cable

Just about. Use one as the main gateway and only actual "router" on the network. The other should be configured as an Access Point, which removes its ability to assign IP addresses (it is no longer a "router") and makes it a network switch having both Ethernet and Wi-Fi outputs.

    Asus Routers to Keep

My own choice would be to keep the ones with the widest range. Coverage is an issue in my 122-year-old house, and I see no use for Wi-Fi 6.

Asus Routers Extension Proper Set-up Using Ethernet Cable

I have a similar configuration (but different model numbers). My RT-AX86U is the gateway router, and an RT-AC86U hardwired to it is configured as an access point. Works flawlessly, been doing so ever since first installed. You can give them both the same SSID or separate, your choice.

    Broken power button

A common solution is to wedge the end of a toothpick into the gap. When you have found the right spot you can also drop a bit glue onto it for security. No need to open the case or fiddle with the circuit board.
