    DIR-655: Wireless setup question

TIpster, Thanks. Yes, per an earlier note from Tim Higgins (Tim, thanks) I am now familiar with the computer browser recommnedations. I did those last week. Computer Browser is only running on the vista. And it worked fine with my old router. I thought perhaps it may need a reset, so I...

    DIR-655: Wireless setup question

OK- all machines now have static IP's with DHCP reservations All machines are XP except main machine is Vista I can now ping to other machines by thier P address.....but not by thier computer names. ie, from 10.68.0.191, I can "ping 10.68.0.192" (and get a response), but I cannot "ping -a...

    DIR-655: Wireless setup question

Based on running ipconfig/all from one of the machines: IP Address:10.68.0.192 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 10.68.0.1 DHCP Server:10.68.0.1 DNS Server:10.68.0.1

    Mutliple G-only AP's

Same SSID? Really? I thought they had to be unique? One SSID would be easier I guess, ie a virtual AP throughout the house. Right now I have the 655 plus one other AP, two sepereae SSIDs....and when I connected to the 655, it asked for my PIN, etc....so how would all this work with a single...

    Also, re reservations, see attached.

    Mutliple G-only AP's

Provided multiple access points have their own SSIDs, is there any downside to having 2 or 3 APs vs one? All would be on 801.11g. Reason I ask: When in the office I am say -20db on NEtStumbler ; but in the basement I am -50db. Any harm adding another AP in the basement to raise those...

    DIR-655: Wireless setup question

Next issue = LAN. I assume this is small one...and a user error ! All my networked machines ( wired or wireless ) can access the internet. I can fuly acceess the router admin pages from any machne. All machines get IP addresses from router. Router is 10.68.0.1 ; machines are 10.68.0.199...

    DIR-655: Wireless setup question

Router works great wired. For wireless, its asking for a Device Ownerhsip Password. I assume this is a once-only request! ). Found and enteted, then started the "registration process", which it failed , specifically, Wi-Fi Protection Setup Wizard. Failed to get the wireless settings...

    DIR-655 User interface

Without a doubt the user interface on the DIR-655 is absolutely pathetic. I spent 20 minutes trying to find where the WPA2 and SSID settings were. Should have marked it down as I am trying to find it again! I upgraded the firmware which set everything back to default. Hopefully they will...

    Taking the plunge

Excellent. Didnt take long to figure out the basics, but basically I walked around the house where laptops would be used, with results attached. I dont know if there is a 'minimum standard', but I think these results are generally good.

    Taking the plunge

Update Ok I waited for the sales and bought a DIR-655 (for my main router to replace old relic FVS318 wired router) , 30% off ( I think there was a price drop on this unit) Three Trendnets TES 452BRP G-only routers for use as access points throughout the house ; they were on sale for...

Grabbing a byte for a bit

Divide by 10, add 20% ... easier still and more accurate... who can divide by 8 these days!!! ... But my main reason for asking was just to confirm the order of magnitude....

    Changing 192.168.0.1

Grandin, many thanks. Just installed my screen door. So nice when it takes 5 seconds and works without issues! Not even a computer re-boot needed. Perhaps there is a debate on maginitude of merits, but certainly there are some, and no drawbacks or cost. Thanks again.

Grabbing a byte for a bit

I'm sure this has been discussed a 1000 times (no pun intended), but is my cheat sheet below correct? My poor brain was raised on bytes, actually megabytes (MB), as in hard drives, RAM, digital memory etc. The networking world seems to be in bits - gigabit cards, 10/100 fast ethernet...

    Changing 192.168.0.1

I believe grandin's point was more to protect against the unintentional/accidental access, as opposed to the intentional/deliberate. Assuming my numbers above are valid, plan to try this shortly.

    Changing 192.168.0.1

Love the screen door analogy ! So I would be ok if I make these changes?: (that is, is my numbering correct) Main router IP: 192.168.0.1 -> 10.68.0.1 SubMask : 255.255.255.0 -> 255.0.0.0 DHCP IP Start: 192.168.0.2 -> 10.68.0.2 DHCP IP End: 192.168.0.100 -> 10.68.0.100 AP IP...

What to do with old pc's : dumb tablet terminal??

I have two really old desktops (machines 7 and 8 !!) with wired internet upstairs in the spare bedrooms, which I keep lying around as they are still actually perfectly fine for lite internet browsing and email checking, old games, etc..especially when we cant sleep and don’t want to go...

    Changing 192.168.0.1

Is there any harm in changing ones default router address to something other than 192.168.0.1? Seems to me its just good practice to do so just in case someone gets access to the network. Its bad enough that I have free access to my neighbours signal, but it was way too east to type in...
