New House Network Design - UVerse ISP

ok so I got the wired switch all set up so now my office is connected to my family room and the two wireless access points (not yet installed) I also ordered a second Black Diamond yesterday for the tidy sum of $40 after rebate so now I have one switch and two wireless access points (once I...

I was wrong. It's mounted on a block of wood which is mounted on the concrete.

thanks the only difference is that the back of my patch panel is the basement concrete wall and not wood or drywall. (I think anyways...) ok off to do wiring! :)

New House Network Design - UVerse ISP

for now I'm capping the existing wires with RJ-45 and wiring up to a switch. I'll do something more permanent as time and money provides. I have half a mind to unscrew that white box from the wall entirely and put something totally different there. That doesn't seem that it was intended to...

New House Network Design - UVerse ISP

thanks for this - very informative - seems like a lot of work to wire up a patch panel only to turn around and connect the business end of that panel into a switch. Maybe this makes more sense if you have a lot more network cables running through your house? I'm still back to cutting all...

two parts of that I didn't comprehend : 1) What is a 110 block? 2) "Get a small patch panel, punch down"? Can you provide more on this? My thought was that every one of those lines gets capped with an RJ-45 head and goes straight into a switch - what are you suggesting?

New House Network Design - UVerse ISP

point of clarification - these are all mine - each one of those wires goes to a port on a wall somewhere in the house. This is what the builders put in, not U-Verse. That whole assembly with the punchdown block and the cable splitter comes out, quite easily in fact and what's left behind is...

finally opened the "white box". What do I do with this? my first thought is to yank them all and cap them with ethernet plugs. also it looks like they didn't label my lines. amateurs.

actually I've talked to the engineer who is in charge of digging the line - this does appear to be fiber to the premises. This does make sense in a way - the entire area where I live is VERY new so whatever they would have laid down for service would be extremely recently. That being said...

New House Network Design - UVerse ISP

so I was advised by the u-verse installers that they will bring switches during install so that we can test to make sure everything works before I buy even a single piece of tech. which I think is really great - I don't want to have to mess around with returning stuff. I also found this...

New House Network Design - UVerse ISP

thanks for the info again. Does the brand constraint on access points pertain to wired switches and wireless access points or just WAPs? yes all ethernet lines terminate in the basement ok so on day 1 when the installer shows up, can I plug the 1) AT&T modem or router into my 2) ASUS Black...

' 5 - 2 adults, 3 kids 2 iphones, 3 ipads, up to 4 laptops, possibly a gaming device (wii, 360) or 2 - I don't think the Wii can go wired. I'm trying to save money This is awesome information - thank you. I believe the U-Verse modem can function as a router? Not ideal but in a...

New House Network Design - UVerse ISP

My preferences are functionality over control and security. So to get back to my $20 gigabit router - is this a good pick for me if I don't want to monkey around with settings a lot? I'm starting to feel like a fish out of water in this thread :)

again apologies, I'm not trying to be rude but paying $200 for any piece of networking tech is not happening. I'm not a small business, I'm an individual and not a particularly wealthy one at that. can we get back to some terminology? managed vs unmanaged? switch vs router?

at the risk of seeming not gracious, can I ask for more recommendations? I googled http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0077AXF4E/?tag=snbforums-20 I'm really sorry but there's no way on earth that I'm ever spending $230 on a router. I would rather replace a $20 router 10 times if I had to. Also, this...

New House Network Design - UVerse ISP

So just to re-set what we're looking at : trying to get u-verse modem in the basement wires to TV, phone, and 3 routers, 2 WAPs. At the moment all I have is one wireless router (Black Diamond) so I need one router for the basement, one for the TV room, one for the office. I guess...
