[DIY] - SmallNetworks - Learning by Doing

Sfx, I would certainly be interested. I´m planning on buying a Supermicro Mini-ITX box in a couple of months to set up a pfSense firewall. What is your opinion on running pfSense in a VM vs bare-bone? I´ve been fiddling with the thought of installing VMWare ESCXi on the new machine and run...

[DIY] - SmallNetworks - Learning by Doing

Sfx, I just noticed that you´ve pulled most of the tutorials. I know that you´re self-moderating this thread, so I hope your excellent tutorials will reappear soon. I like to redo these exercises several times for practicing and learning.

Sfx, You are a genius! Thanks for your patience and for bearing over with me! That was it, phpmyadmin running flawlessly now. :) Ole

[DIY] - SmallNetworks - Learning by Doing

Yes, I know. All the other stuff works, except for phpmyadmin. hostname = Parallels-Ubuntu hostip = 192.168.10.15 http://parallels-ubuntu.local/ and http://192.168.10.15/ returns the default page. http://parallels-ubuntu.local/lbd/index.html and http://192.168.10.15/lbd/index.html returns the...

[DIY] - SmallNetworks - Learning by Doing

Sfx, The only thing I´m not able to get working is the phpmyadmin web stuff. I´ve installed phpmyadmin strictly according to your tutorial, but when I go to http://hostname.local/phpmyadmin, i.e. http://parallels-ubuntu.local/phpmyadmin, I´m getting an 404 error. Ole

I don´t get any values in the graph here. What IP address should I put in this section? I´m getting an "ERROR: /etc/smokeping/config.d/Targets, line 33: unknown section 'SNB LBD Host'" error. Fixed it by changing "++ SNB LBD Host" to "++ SNB-LBD-Host". I suppose that "hostname.local" is the...

Thanks for confirming. The ssh and samba services both work flawlessly now in my Ubuntu Desktop VM. Absolutely, I currently have Ubuntu Desktop and Windows 10 Pro running in Parallels Desktop 11 and pfSense 2.3.2-DEVELOPMENT running in VirtualBox on my MacBook Pro.:) Ole

[DIY] - SmallNetworks - Learning by Doing

Sfx, I followed the SSH guidance on a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 install in VirtualBox (just for the purpose of practicing). Before saving a copy of and editing the "sshd_config" file I checked the /etc/ssh directory and only found the "ssh_config" file, which I believe is the configuration file for...

[DIY] - SmallNetworks - Learning by Doing

Sfx, By following your tutorials and guidance, I´ve succeeded to install and auto-run the following services: Samba SSH VNCServer When I check the services with the "systemctl status <service>" command, the SSH and VNCServer services seems working while the Samba service reports to be...

[DIY] - SmallNetworks - Learning by Doing

Sfx, I´m learning a lot by studying your excellent tutorials/examples in this thread. Now that I´ve set up Samba and SSH-Server on my Ubuntu Desktop, I would like to start these services automatically when Ubuntu starts, pretty much like the autostart functionality in Windows. At the moment I...

[DIY] - SmallNetworks - Learning by Doing

I get an "Failed to start OpenBSD Secure Shell" error caused by the "XForwarding no" line. When commented out, the ssh service restarts and I´m able to login to the ssh server. Edit: Changing "XForwarding no" to "X11Forwarding no" fixed it. Is this the correct command? Ole

[DIY] - SmallNetworks - Learning by Doing

Thank you very much for this excellent tutorial on how to setup a Samba fileserver! I just recently installed Ubuntu 16.04 in VirtualBox on my MacBook Pro with the purpose of learning some Linux/Unix. I´ve also downloaded the free "The Linux Command Line" book by William E. Shotts and am trying...

VLAN How To: Segmenting a small LAN

Not yet, but perhaps I should do that. Generally, do you see any problems with untagged traffic on my SG300 switch ports (see image)?

VLAN How To: Segmenting a small LAN

Sure, I use VLAN 1 solely for management of the network devices (router, switches, APs) and only 1 client (me) is using VLAN 1 for this purpose. Since management tasks are just occasionally, there will be practically no traffic on VLAN 1. VLAN 99 which trunks all traffic to and from the local...

VLAN How To: Segmenting a small LAN

Sure, I have routing statements on the LRT224 for VLAN 20, VLAN 40 and VLAN 50 pointing to 192.168.99.2. I actually like that only VLAN 1 (Management VLAN) clients can access the management interface on the router, but I´ll check if adding a permit rule to the firewall will allow access.

    [Talk] - pfSense 2.3 release/upgrades

I´ve also been following the pfSense forum after the 2.3 release. Seems to be a lot of early issues. I´m not using pfSense yet (hopefully soon), but if I were I would also stick to 2.2.6 until the noise has calmed down. :) Ole

VLAN How To: Segmenting a small LAN

I don´t know why VLAN 20 clients can´t access the management interface on the LRT224, see the image of the SG300 routing table below. VLAN 40 (Internet of Things) and VLAN 50 (Guest) clients are blocked by ACL. As I said, VLAN 1 is solely used for management, so no problem for me. Before this...
