How to set up VPN access to my network

My choice would be to set up OpenVPN server on your router (which I think you have already), rather than on the Synology Diskstation NAS itself. An advantage of doing it this way is that after your relative logs on remotely, he/she will also be able to print to any networked printer you have at...

    USB Unmounted

A couple of years ago I saw the same problems with a RT-AC66U. I had previously noted that the USB stick got quite hot, and wondered if that was relevant. So I inserted a 15cm (6 inch) USB extension cable between the router and the stick. The cable acted as a sort of heat sink, and the USB...

AC68U - Cannot access via GUI but via SSH

I guess it would help to know which router it is, and which web browser you are using.

Best router for experimenting with Merlin FW?

I just measured my RT-AC86U. With the aerials vertical, it's 12.5 inches tall. If the aerials are angled to slightly "flatter" than 45°, it would just fit into a 10 inch vertical space. If the shelf in question is free standing, would it be possible to screw another piece of wood underneath...

    Static DHCP mapping issues

And maybe make sure that the host names do not contain any illegal characters. Some characters are problematic (there was a thread about this somewhere). I use only letters, numbers and minus signs and that works ok for me.

    Fixing a Small Business Network

I guess it all depends on what sort of information she has in the cloud. Would her business survive if it got lost through vendor bankruptcy or foul up ? For example, if her only copy of her accounts receivable ledger is in the cloud, she might never recover the money owed to her by her...

    NAS recommendation

I have been using the Synology DS21- series for more than 10 years and I am very happy with them. I now have 5 for various purposes. Many people on the forum seem to like and talk about Synology or QNAP. I rarely stream video, but find that the 1 USB port on the DS218+ gives sufficient speed...

    Fixing a Small Business Network

Looking at this from a Corporate Governance viewpoint, business continuity is also a very important topic. One of the cloud suppliers could suddenly go bankrupt or lose all the data entrusted to them. In this case it's important that your daughter would be able to find a replacement solution...

limiting wireless coverage (adjust transmit power, move access points)

Is the problem that the person concerned believes they are very sensitive to electro-magnetic radiation, and does not wish to be subjected to it ? This is an entirely different issue to allowing or prohibiting access to your WiFi.

    Good openvpn router

I don't have experience of the Netgear equipment, but so far I have owned 6 Asus routers and liked them. None gave me any problems (looks for large block of wood to touch). Asus also keeps supporting its products (firmware revisions) longer than the average router vendor. Another advantage of...

    Good openvpn router

Powerline You mention that the TalkTalk modem-router and your RT-N66U upstairs are connected by powerlines, which limit the speed to 40Mb/s. Inevitably, any server connection using OpenVPN could never exceed this speed. Much better would be to run an ethernet cable but you probably already...

XUbuntu 18.04 Cannot connect to home wifi but can connect to my mobile hotspot

Could it be that your ASUS RT-AC68R is transmitting on a channel that the USB stick cannot receive ? Some channels are allowed in some jurisdictions, but not in others. If the router and USB stick were bought in different countries, there could be a mismatch.

Request error, please try again - DDNS with dnsomatic ?

Most others posting here seem to be using Host Name: all.dnsomatic.com and it works for them. I am using Host Name: <mydomain>.<mydnssservice.com> and that works for me. I don't know which is the better variant. Perhaps it doesn't matter when using dsnomatic as the...

    (Free) DDNS recommendation?

The setup which I have is as follows: Server: dnsomatic.com Host Name: mydomain.mydnssservice.com Username or E-mail Address: my dnsomatic account user ID (for example, JohnDoe) Password or DDNS Key: my dnsomatic account password The text above "mydomain.mydnssservice.com"...

    conduit or not?

If you find the size of the tubing makes it difficult to route around obstacles, you could always run 2 or more smaller tubes in parallel. We are generally a tolerant lot here :-) but your question might indeed have better visibilty in a different section. But as we are both here I will...

    conduit or not?

.... or use corrugated plastic smurf tube, which can be bent to whatever radius you like

    conduit or not?

Another vote here for plastic conduit. The wider the better. Metal conduit may require grounding according to your local code. Plastic will not. You may also want to check if there are code requirements to run "plenum" conduit, which will not give off poisonous fumes in a fire. I suspect...

[Release] Asuswrt-Merlin 384.13 is now available

In certain configurations, the RT-AC86U running 384.13 seems very stable - 61% memory usage after 69 days uptime. I did a clean install and switched off all the features I don't need: -clean install -no AiProtection or other Trend Micro modules -no Qos -no AiCloud -no IPv6 and on the wireless...

Router behind Router and external access

If I understand correctly, your system looks as follows: ISP ----> FRITZ!Box 7530 ----> Asus RT-AC68U ----> home network Apart from the DMZ suggestion mentioned by Greg72 above, another way might be to set up port forwarding on your ISP's FRITZ!Box modemrouter to forward incoming OVPN traffic...

Is using a USB stick a bad idea?

I found that attaching the USB stick to the router with a 15cm (6 inch) USB extension cable resulted in the stick running a lot cooler - more so than I expected. Most of the heat seemed to come from the router itself (RT-AC66U at that time) rather than bering generated in the stick itself.
