UPnP: Actual security risks of allowing ports below 1024.

I guess you are removing one line of defence. If you don't have a good firewall on your PCs/servers and/or misconfigure basic services, that setting can protect you. Provided you are sure you know everything that is going to open ports and you trust them then you are fine.

    5Ghz goes down

No idea if this is related, but interesting that this has only happened to me since updating our devices to IOS 9: http://www.snbforums.com/threads/ac87-5ghz-ios9-weird-behaviour.25420/

    5Ghz goes down

I get where you are coming from, but maybe most of the time the Quantenna chip restarts and people don't notice. We don't stare at the log all the time. And there are actually a few coming forward with this now and even more talking about the normal Asus firmware who say 5Ghz "drops out". Merlin...

    5Ghz goes down

Thanks RMerlin, but interesting it never happens with 4950, unless the hardware is just beginning to fail and interesting that sometimes it restarts and sometimes not. I agree though - wait until the replacements emerge!

    5Ghz goes down

Looks like there is a real "bug" here. We all have the same MAC address shown. Don't think this is one of our LAN devices. Quantenna seems the most likely. Sometimes, like for me yesterday, the 5Ghz network restarts successfuly. Sometimes not. I never saw it on my router or AP when running Asus...

    5Ghz goes down

Actually no, probably unrelated. that was my AP falling over and rebooting (It's the AP's MAC and I verified in the APs log). Mind you previously the AP had been up for months, so maybe it is related, or maybe it just needed a reset???

    5Ghz goes down

Seeing more of these in the log after reboot now. Never noticed them before, not to say they weren't there. This time I see almost 3 minutes of BOOTP Sep 18 15:49:05 dnsmasq-dhcp[683]: BOOTP(br0) 00:26:86:00:00:00 no address configured Sep 18 15:49:06 dnsmasq-dhcp[683]: BOOTP(br0)...

    5Ghz goes down

I've just got the same problem on 378.55. 5Ghz been down for a couple of days, not sure how long because the log is filled with those messages and the same MAC address. I've rebooted. let's see what happens. Had been up, flawlessly, for weeks prior to this problem. I've never seen this on 2...

    [Beta] RT-AC87U_3.0.0.4_378_8248 Unofficial Beta

I find it amazing what we will put up with on a top-end router. I NEVER rebooted my old (ISP supplied!) Netgear router. I also had my 2 AC87Us, running 4950, up for 100 days with no slowdowns or other issues. I'm now on 378.55 (Merlin) and no problems in a couple of weeks; we will see. I don't...

    Master Browser problem

Thanks. After your pointer about the "1d" code I did some digging. For anyone else with a similar issue or if you think you have a similar issue these links might help https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/using_samba/ch07.html https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/163409 I think I've come to the...

    Asus AC87u dropping out

Very hard to say with the info to hand, but best guess is you haven't fully disabled the Netgear, or it has a conflicting IP. Make sure it has a unique IP (eg 192.168.1.2) and the router is set to assign from .3 and up. If you cannot find a problem, I'd try for a while without the Netgear, eg...

    Master Browser problem

Thanks for the pointer. I can now see the error was simply the PC trying to become Master Browser. I'm now thinking it may be a coincidence.

    Master Browser problem

OK. Thanks. Maybe I need to dig deeper into this. Still, I'm interested in how this should work. What are we supposed to need to do to use the router as Master Browser? Should it "just work" by turning it on in the RMerlin firmware or is there more?

    Master Browser problem

That's not how I read it, but I may be wrong. My understanding is 192.168.0.6 (the Windows 10 system that has become unbrowsable) is trying to register its network name with 192.168.0.1 (the router and Master Browser) but the router is saying that name is already taken.

    Master Browser problem

Thanks, but I understand the error. What I don't understand is why it would happen on a long standing network without any name changes when I start to force my router as Master Browser.

    Master Browser problem

Sorry for the probably noob question! I have a regular workgroup-based network - no domain server, all PCs on the same segment and in the same workgroup - no Homegroup. I've just tried to "Force as Master Browser" in 378.55. All seemed to work for a few hours but then in the middle of the night...

    RT-N66U/AC56U/AC66U/AC68U/AC87U/_3.0.0.4_378_6065- Firmwares

Weird that firmware that clearly says "Japan only" (although I realise that this is not a technical limitation) is offered to all on the Asus Support site and my router has found it with its update check.

ASUS RT-AC87 Firmware - Official Releases

35 days on 378.4950. 20 devices, AC87 AP and Router. Still going strong.

ASUS RT-AC87 Firmware - Official Releases

It's all very weird, because (and sorry to those who have read this before) I have an iPhone 6, iPhone Air 2, Intel 7260 AC laptop and many other non-AC stuff besides, with 2 Ac87s (router and AP) on 378.4950 and the 2 AC87s have been up now for 30 days with, quite literally, flawless...

    AC87U disconnection on 2.4ghz.

So the noise is the same or different on the new router?
