Trying to get around ASUS Router Limitations

I was kind of thinking along these lines after I wrote the post (sometimes writing a problem out helps you sort things out in your head, you know?) I have a small Zotac mini box laying around and have been toiling with repurposing it as a DHCP server and placing it between the router and the...

Trying to get around ASUS Router Limitations

Greetings, I have a bit of a weird problem I am trying to resolve. I'm working on building out my smart home with all the smart things and to keep it all sorted for sanity and potential troubleshooting, I've been making dang sure to assign everything to IP pools via the DHCP. I'm running an...

    DHCP Limit Help / dnsmasq

Greetings, I'm running an ASUS AC-3100 with the current Asuswrt-Merlin firmware. I'd like to be able to up the DHCP Limit probably up to the maximum. I keep a pretty firm grip on my IP assignments and I know the scope of what I do is probably FAR outside what the average user is going to...

Setting up an ASUS RT-N66U running Merlin on an existing network

I figured I'd stop by and give an aftermath of the happenings. Things work now --- but I am very confused why and how --- I suspect I will never actually get the answer. As I had mentioned, I ended up setting up an Ubuntu Workstation and configured it mostly as a server installing several...

Setting up an ASUS RT-N66U running Merlin on an existing network

I've been exploring other options I might have --- I think before I play with router firmware, I'm going to see if I can setup a Linux Server in between my connection and the router and see if that will give me the results I need. Frankly, I'd prefer a Windows Server just because of my...

Setting up an ASUS RT-N66U running Merlin on an existing network

Gah, never done that before. Oh well, time to learn. I'll figure that out today and see where I stand.

Setting up an ASUS RT-N66U running Merlin on an existing network

So, I'm running into a problem here getting this firmware installed. Since its an older version then Merlins (he's at 380.7), it's claiming it can't install it because of a security risk being that's older. I was going to revert to an earlier version of the OEM Firmware and try that, but I...

Setting up an ASUS RT-N66U running Merlin on an existing network

I got some time to mess around with it for a while. I can use the "Spoof LAN TTL Value" --- but there seems to be no options to set the TTL value. This option does not work. The only setting remotely in that area related-ish is the MNU settings, which I don't think would do anything...

Setting up an ASUS RT-N66U running Merlin on an existing network

Yes I have tried that. I'll do a sanity check and try it again with the current configuration. Here's the screen shots from that: https://ln.sync.com/dl/d95b08dd0/ejemr9zm-b7mgsy6n-rppyjpv6-9g44bfea Pinging www.google.com from the laptop while its plugged into the router times out. Netsh...

Setting up an ASUS RT-N66U running Merlin on an existing network

It sets itself after being online for some time. The timezone is correct on the router. If you notice, the times correct themselves later in the log.

Setting up an ASUS RT-N66U running Merlin on an existing network

Ok, this is a COMPLETELY reset router. I noticed that I was probably trying a few things on some previous screen shots. I tried to grab as much as I could to ensure nothing is left to the imagination. Here is the folder link to all the images...

Setting up an ASUS RT-N66U running Merlin on an existing network

Sorry, I didn't see this reply. I'll double check this for you now, but am 99% sure I'll get nothing.

Setting up an ASUS RT-N66U running Merlin on an existing network

The apartment complex does cater towards students. It's not exclusive to students however.

Setting up an ASUS RT-N66U running Merlin on an existing network

I'm likely to start messing around with WRT on a spare atom computer to see if I can get different results from it. If you have any thoughts after looking at the log, please let me know. If you need more details, let me know.

Setting up an ASUS RT-N66U running Merlin on an existing network

To be clear, it's not "out of box" configuration, it's running Merlin v380.70 Firmware: https://sourceforge.net/projects/asuswrt-merlin/files/RT-N66U/Release/ I'm starting to wonder if I should try a different firmware. Been thinking about trying straight WRT or Tomato.

Setting up an ASUS RT-N66U running Merlin on an existing network

What I think I need help with is how to properly setup a subnet while still having the network able to see the internet. I don't really have any experience on this and the documentation I've found/read on it, isn't clear to me.

Setting up an ASUS RT-N66U running Merlin on an existing network

All clients in my apartment are not using any special settings. The RT-N66U, as of this moment, is all in default settings mode save setting the admin password and the names/passwords on the wifi. I managed all network IP assignments, routing, port forwarding etc from the RT-N66U under my...
