Soft Reboot (fail) vs Hard Reboot

There is a partial remediation described here: It does not fix everything, but seems to help.

Low-Power SSD for amtm, Diversion, Entware and Tailscale on the USB 2.0 Port (USB 3.0 configured as USB 2.0)

I have a cheap 240GB SATA SSD with a Phison PS3111 controller hanging on a simple USB2 cable adapter for a couple of years now without any issues, so I searched for its specs. Here is the official spec sheet: Power Consumption Table 4-2 Power Consumption of PS3111 uSSD Capacity Flash Structure...

BACKUPMON BACKUPMON v1.5.10 -Mar 1, 2024- Backup/Restore your Router: JFFS + NVRAM + External USB Drive! (**Thread closed due to age**)

Of course you are correct :) That was actually an early thought - I now just run the script right before I schedule the cron jobs: admin@RT-AC86U-9988:/jffs/scripts# cat services-start #!/bin/sh /jffs/scripts/scmerlin startup & # scMerlin /jffs/addons/amtm/shellhistory # Added by amtm...

    Stuck commands

Ran the script for a day, below is the grep from trace file for the script. Lots of 'nvram get' commands get stuck! admin@RT-AC86U-9988:/tmp/mnt/ac86u/entware/var/log/Trace# grep nvram *.txt StuckProcCmds_00001_06276.TRC.txt:2024-01-25 12:05:21 1119 1111 admin S 3104 0.7 0 0.0...

BACKUPMON BACKUPMON v1.5.10 -Mar 1, 2024- Backup/Restore your Router: JFFS + NVRAM + External USB Drive! (**Thread closed due to age**)

It sounds like this issue hits mostly ARMv8 + AES devices for sure, or maybe only the older HND (BCM490x), and not the later ones? If it's a dead branch (HND), the problem is probably never getting addressed ...

BACKUPMON BACKUPMON v1.5.10 -Mar 1, 2024- Backup/Restore your Router: JFFS + NVRAM + External USB Drive! (**Thread closed due to age**)

    Interesting idea! I've added this to my post-mount : cru a ScheduledReboot "5 4 * * * /sbin/service 'reboot'" #CheckStuckProcCmds.sh cru a stuck "*/30 * * * * /jffs/scripts/CheckStuckProcCmds.sh 2>&1 | /usr/bin/logger -t Stuck" cru a stuck "12 4 * * * /jffs/scripts/CheckStuckProcCmds.sh 2>&1 |...

BACKUPMON BACKUPMON v1.5.10 -Mar 1, 2024- Backup/Restore your Router: JFFS + NVRAM + External USB Drive! (**Thread closed due to age**)

Excellent! I put this in! Also, I noticed my backup cron job in post-mount was named the same, and was overwriting the original one from services-start, so I changed the line in post-mount to : cru a RunBackupMon0 "28 4 * * * sh /jffs/scripts/backupmon.sh" This way I could monitor the...

BACKUPMON BACKUPMON v1.5.10 -Mar 1, 2024- Backup/Restore your Router: JFFS + NVRAM + External USB Drive! (**Thread closed due to age**)

Well, I reboot daily, and I have scheduled backups about ~20 min after a reboot. So I don't think /jffs/scripts/services-start cron job is disappearing, it's more like it has not been scheduled in the first place. Probably tasks before this one in services-start never finish...

    For some reason the BACKUPMON stopped getting added to the cron jobs, here is services-start file: admin@RT-AC86U-9988:/jffs/scripts# cat services-start #!/bin/sh /jffs/scripts/scmerlin startup & # scMerlin /jffs/addons/amtm/shellhistory # Added by amtm cru a root_servers "12 4 * * * curl -o...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.12 is now available for AC models

Oh, sorry about that, did not know ... Sometimes routers are used in places where they were not bought - I got a used one and it seems to say Canada vs US.

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.12 is now available for AC models

It's a bit strange. You take a newer router with the same CPU clock, and run small tests to see if it's any better than the older router with the same CPU clock. And it turns out it's just a tiny bit better due to the next gen WiFi, and perhaps some interface improvements. Then you argue that...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.12 is now available for AC models

It seems this router has the very same cpu as AC86u, and same RAM size. It appears to be a simple bump of AC to AX for AC86u! So even faster interface is a bit suspect - could it be simply due to the newer firmware series?

Might be ready to give AiMesh another look

I assume there is a tiny bit more fault tolerance on your IoT devices if all of them need a reboot after they see a new WiFi with the same SSID when you switch. In any event, you could set up AiMesh, and turn off/on the power to house. That should reboot most of IoT devices nicely :D

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.12 is now available for AC models

Have the latest firmware 386.12_4 for a few weeks now on AC86u. Running AiProtection and TM - have to. There is an AiMesh node connected via 5 Ghz band. About ~20 devices Max at various times. The router is on UPS, so no power supply reboots. The main router is cron rebooted nightly at 4:05 am...

Might be ready to give AiMesh another look

Yeah, not clear what problems need to be solved. It seems keeping this gargantuan network going is a full time job :) But, on the technical side you could back up routers one by one using BACKUPMON, reset them all, add to AiMesh. If you don't like AiMesh - you can restore routers back using...

    Kill switch doesn't work

Ideally, I'd like to see some of KILLMON functionality directly in the firmware itself, in VPN Director, under Add new rule ( Max Limit : 199 ) 🤣 Perhaps, there is some room for collaboration with @RMerlin ??? - Nah, probably too far fetched ... ;) A simple use case is 1 device - specific VPN...

    Kill switch doesn't work

So here are a couple of interesting datapoints to keep the conversation going. First, the new kill-switch functionality is such that sometimes it does not kill the connection if VPN is down (Sept 2021) - the issue that is causing a bit of disconnect relative to the prior expectations...

BACKUPMON BACKUPMON v1.5.10 -Mar 1, 2024- Backup/Restore your Router: JFFS + NVRAM + External USB Drive! (**Thread closed due to age**)

Lots of secondary SSD makers use mystery meat for components. If it's not Samsung/Crucial - you get random stuff. I feel 2nd hand older Samsung SSDs on eBay are incredible value, and have lots of life left. Patriot stuff can be great, can be junky.

    Kill switch doesn't work

So is it a fair conclusion that the way kill-switch works now is more simple to maintain that the more restrictive block all version? Looking through other places such as Reddit it seems stand alone VPN clients also suffer from occasional malfunctions with kill-switch. Another issue is never...
