    Newbie: Synology or DLink NAS

Synology or QNAP. Very similar. They are best in class. file transfers via LAN and WAN via standard TCP/IP have lots of error detection and correction. Most common data loss is due to consistent 3-2-1 backups. RAID is not a backup.

Synology nas ds1815+ or qnap tsv-471

transcoding on the fly adds a lot to nas price. versus batch transcoding on a fast pc

    Script error with firefox

This is what I get right now (11Jun16 21:37 PT) Firefox can't find the server at secure-ds.serving-sys.xn--urstingscript-9q16e.

Synology nas ds1815+ or qnap tsv-471

Your recordings are already 4K but have to be transcoded down to a smaller format?

Synology nas ds1815+ or qnap tsv-471

call or email Synology sales. Data is data, 4K or not, presuming no on-the-fly transcoding (which isn't practical at 4K).

Synology nas ds1815+ or qnap tsv-471

Have you used the demo web sites for these vendors? Read the user forums? 4K streaming needs wired gigabit ethernet, not WiFi to TVs. Without more specifics, either will be fine. The differences are slight.

    Asustor AS3104T Hanging State?

Protection fault sounds to me like a bug in the software that could be coding error or data used by the code that is incorrect and the code doesn't detect/cope with bad data (config or state data, not file data). Just speculating. Only way to know is to reset to factory condition and reinstall...

Synology NASes are more expensive than DIY

besides cost, DIY has a dearth of features as compared to Synology or QNAP

Run DSM 5 from open source on any x86

@Geberious Do you forasee a Xoebikigt boot for DSM6? I ran DSM6 on x86 but it isn't supported (yet?) and would not create a volume. DSM5 is OK as you know.

is Synology right for my needs (vs DUI)? Network/NAS update

I ran XPenology on a USB boot flash drive. Then loaded up and ran DSM5. Ran fine. Ran fast on older Dell E6500 laptop. I don't run it now, as my DS212 is fine for my needs.

What backup software do you use?

backup: 3-2-1 strategy. Read about that?

a little confused about backup methods

I don't use Synology's PC program for backup; I use Acronis True Image for drive images stored on the NAS, and for work in process, I use Centered Systems Second Copy.

What backup software do you use?

OP was asking about backup of the NAS, rather than backup PC files to NAS, as I read it. Carbonite will not permit a NAS backup under their affordable plans. And TB of data is too much to backup to an internet "cloud" service. Via WEBDAV, rsync, and other common NAS utilities you can backup...

Run DSM 5 from open source on any x86

Anything similar for QNAP? I found a site with their obligatory source code. But not a boot program to use the standard release binaries as done for DSM.

Run DSM 5 from open source on any x86

I stumbled upon http://xpenology.me/introduction/ This is a boot program for x86 processors. You put it on bootable media (CD, USB), along with a few other files, using an ISO image file to bootable media utility. Once booted, you can then install Synology's DSM5 OS on a blank disk in that x86...

Time Warner perhaps Router/Modem issue? limited download

Time Warner in my region doesn't have 300Mbps service. Fastest they have for me is 100/10. I wouldn't pay a premium for faster.

Create Wireless network that can accommodate 50 users

Just use 2+ consumer Access Points (APs). Put each on non-overlapping channel frequencies, both bands. ASUS low cost routers have an AP mode as do o9thers. Microtek is a science experiment, if you wish. What is the WAN speed? That dictates what class router you need (one router, many APs, where...

I've successfully used inexpensive Engenius bridges (built-in gain antenna). Search New Egg and other sites.

    USB Drives not recognised

Not DSM6, but DSM5. See thread here on that topic. http://www.snbforums.com/threads/nas-any-brand-external-usb-drive-bay-issues.32311/ started out talking about external 2 bay drive enclosure. Generally, USB2 drives work without problem, but USB3 are if'y. USB3 normally do work if plugged in at...
