iDrive Launches iDrive One Wireless Storage Device

WPA beloved, security prudence says I wouldn't do that. It's a honeypot. Convenient, yes.

    Two story apartment WiFi

I've never had that with my HTC or Samsung or iPhone clients, nor an iPad. But that's a limited set of devices.

WIFI roaming in a large house

Lots of prior discussions on this topic. Short answer: You can't optimize this because many client (handhelds) do no change access devices (router, AP) until the link reliability is poor, no matter the speed degradation due to weak signal. Consumer WiFi does not provide "directed handoff", e.g...

Need advice on my NAS storage - the wires everywhere bit

It's all about the OS functionality and utilities. Not about cases, nuts and bolts. It's an intellectual activity. Item 1 in a NAS is how to back it up. Either a 2nd like kind or rsync server, or as may SOHO/home users do, a big fat USB3 drive plugged in. Indispensable. RAID is not a...

    Qnap TS-253a vs Synology DS-216+

No, QNAP has the same step-ups. These are the NASes where you pay 15% more for a CPU with the same pinout but it's a bit faster. Like Intel and AMD CPUs in PCs. QNAP vs. Synology is a choice to make after doing a fair amount of your own homework, on-line trial of their Admin interfaces, look at...

15 years later and multi AP setups are still terrible

Solution is managed WiFi for $$$ enterprise. No low cost fast handoffs in consumer. Probably because there's low mobility while operating WiFi, in a residence. We do have IEEE 802.11 standards for secure fast handoffs. But they're not popular. Managed WiFi for enterprise are mostly using...

    Two story apartment WiFi

Could be. But in travels in big hotels, and even where I live, I see 15 SSIDs in just 2.4. In the 10 story medical building, every office with WiFi for the staff (paperless doctors!), I see maybe 20 SSIDs. None more than a couple of floors away. Many commercial buildings have floors that are a...

Need advice on my NAS storage - the wires everywhere bit

The drive caddy... referenced above... how would you connect that to a NAS? I see only USB3 and (dying away) eSATA. eSATA is not SATA. Voltages and cables differ. Not sure NAS OS will support eSATA whereas USB3 is pluggable without reboot of NAS.

    Qnap TS-253a vs Synology DS-216+

Synology model XXX+, the plus option is not a good value, IMO. The xxxj are to be avoided if you can afford to. Earlier a post said choosing a NAS with intent to keep it up to 10 years. I wouldn't do so. Technology changes and lack of OS upgrade support much beyond 6 years is the issue. I think...

    Wireless Range - Thread repost

Agree. MIMO based router? Don't change the antennas. Reason is very technical.

    Two story apartment WiFi

I live in 1700 sq. ft, two story. Router downstairs. Upstairs opposite end from router, one $50 AP connected by ethernet (could have been MoCA or power line). Just fine. Zillions of SSIDs nearby. Not a problem. None are bandwidth hogs.

is Synology right for my needs (vs DUI)? Network/NAS update

I hesitate to recommend a specific QNAP or Synology for fear of stirring up controversy. 2+ years ago I considered them all and chose a DS212. If/when I buy a later one, it'll probably be another 2 bay and again, run in 2-volume mode, no RAID. I don't need the capacity or cost of a 4 bay. I...

Why You Should Disable Lower Legacy Data Rates

Using 11g or even 11b rates.. some use cases with lower data rate needs trade using that low rate for much longer range. Because the lower rates tolerate a weak signal better (low SINR tolerated). Example: infrequent telemetry in machine to machine (M2M) applications.

is Synology right for my needs (vs DUI)? Network/NAS update

yes to all with one thing I see crashplan for ~100 GB of photos to the cloud Crashplan can be made to run on Linux in Synology and others but I don't do it because I don't alter the OS at all in my NAS. I use its many utilities and tools and approved add-ons. I don't want to dork up a reliable...

Anybody using a cloud service to backup their QNAP NAS?

All said and done, that's the easiest. And free. And not hogging limited upstream bandwidth. I use Adrive ($25/yr for 100GB) and push only VIP files that aren't sensitive personal financial/healthcare info. Family photos is one thing I push. I've had it for a year and I'm a heavy work at home...

    Amazon Puts Money Behind Luma

Open Mesh - hardware/software meshing on 2.4GHz WiFi for access. Been ar0und for some time now. Supported by CloudTrax (cloud server based mesh management - multiple vendors) I wonder how Open Mesh .com (not .org) is doing? http://www.open-mesh.com/

Home Mesh Wi-Fi Coming This Summer From eero

My problem with Apple and Apple WiFi is that it is so dumbed-down that a geek like me can't figure out how to use it. I remember well how long I spent trying to tell an Apple WiFi thing, in the era of WEP, what my hexadecimal password was. As the family guru, I was trying to help a relative get...

If you don't have speeds in access of 150Mbps whats the point of a AC router ?

900Mbps!! Fiber to the desktop? Wireless broadband data speeds (WiFi included) -- depend on the ratio of signal power to noise+interference. Acronym: SINR (signal to interference and noise ratio). THIS IS TWO-WAY. Most people are unaware that the client-to-router signal strength is important...
