Having two access points vs AiMesh?

Agreed. I just got caught up in the aimesh marketing a couple of years ago when I should have researched better at the time and added APs rather than routers. I'm really pleased I looked into opnsense/pfsense. I hadn't even thought that it was possible to build my own router / firewall on x86...

Having two access points vs AiMesh?

That is good value ($130 here in oz through amazon) but I wanted to use unifi as I already had a unifi switch. I bought a unifi U6 mini that has similar specs to the omada and I got it for $170 oz on amazon so similar price.

Having two access points vs AiMesh?

Thanks for the update. I have accepted that scripting vlans to APs (or nodes) is just too tricky to setup and maintain. I agree with @Tech9 regarding APs v mesh nodes but sometimes you have no choice if you can't get a wire to an AP. The other thing I have decided is that using 'routers' as...

Pfsense/opnsense box with AX88U Merlin firmware

I’m about one month running my minipc with opnsesne and I finally have my network working perfectly. There was something about ASUS and Apple home kit (mdns related) that was so frustrating and unsolvable. Not any more! 100% perfect all the time. The time I spent trying with my ASUS kit could...

Having two access points vs AiMesh?

Thanks. I was thinking it might be possible with scripting but I haven’t looked into it yet. For a tinkering project, I think this is too much work.

Having two access points vs AiMesh?

I’m keen to see if I can get a vlan working on my AX ASUS APs. I’m using opnsense router with vlan setup and working on my managed switch and UniFi AP. The last part of the project is to get the vlan working on my ASUS APs but not sure if it’s even possible for them to broadcast lan and vlan...

Pfsense/opnsense box with AX88U Merlin firmware

I bought a very cheap minipc based on a J4125 quad core intel processor, 16G ram, 128gb ssd and 4x2.5g network for $200 aussie. It's fanless so I think its running on around 15-20w (CPU is 10w). It's low end hardware i know but for home use compared to a cheap router, I think that's a bargain.

Pfsense/opnsense box with AX88U Merlin firmware

Thanks all. I tried proxmox with opnsense on my minipc and had a couple of issues with the pc freezing up. Switched to bare metal opnsense and no issue since.

Pfsense/opnsense box with AX88U Merlin firmware

Thanks @Tech9 I can see that my asus APs are limited (no VLAN) without quite a bit of tinkering. At the moment I don't really have a need for VLANs or I will created a wired VLAN with a managed switch and add one of my APs - so there are some (limited) options. Next big shift for my use...

Pfsense/opnsense box with AX88U Merlin firmware

I didn't have a managed switch and/or the knowledge when I started on this a month ago. Now I get what you are saying and can see how you could get it working with a single physical network interface and managed switch. I might also look at running adguard on opnsense and get rid of my two DNS...

Pfsense/opnsense box with AX88U Merlin firmware

Hey @Tech9 - hope all is well. Look what you started here. haha. I already had 2 raspberry pi's setup as dedicated DNS adguard/unbound servers so I have continued to use these in my setup.

Pfsense/opnsense box with AX88U Merlin firmware

Have fun. Start with proxmox on the dell. Then add opnsense and anything else you need as a VMs. Does you dell have 2 network adapters? Top tip is you can create virtual network adapters in proxmox so you can actually make it all work with just one physical network adapter! I was blown away...

Pfsense/opnsense box with AX88U Merlin firmware

Here is an example of my main issue with Unifi controller in my mixed environment. This view is supposed to show all network clients but for some reason I never have anything shown connected to my balcony or bedroom AP - but there are many. Both wired and wireless. So not perfect 'visually'...

Pfsense/opnsense box with AX88U Merlin firmware

You can enable smart connect when using Asus routers as APs. I personally do not and simply use the same SSID (and password) for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands. This works fine/better in my opinion. No need to 'rename the network' when making this change. In terms of parental controls, this will not...

Pfsense/opnsense box with AX88U Merlin firmware

Thanks all for this interesting thread / topic. I was planning to get a unifi controller and some APs but decided to build my own opnsense router using a $200 mini pc from aliexpress... This is the summary/update: mini pc with opnsense bare metal now running as primary router all my existing...

Thanks. I have v1 for sure as have been running Merlin on it for a couple of years.

Flashing latest stock from latest merlin fails on RT-AX58U and RT-AX3000

Hi all, I have been running merlin on my aimesh nodes for a while but have decided to switch them to APs and run stock on them. Flashing from merlin to stock fails and I now remember that I need to flash an old version of stock first. I have searched the forum but I can't find the old version...

Help - duckdns has started returning an IPv6 IP address

Please ignore. Have fixed the issue by a combo of: 1. asked ISP to disable IPv6 (not the issue BTW) 2. restart router (to pick up new IP from ISP - also not the issue) 3. rebooted iPhone (I think this was the issue but not sure as I was trying everything all at once!) Happy Easter everyone.

Help - duckdns has started returning an IPv6 IP address

Trying to work out if I need to talk to my ISP or someone else as I can no longer connect to my network from the outside using duckdns as my DDNS service. If I ping my duckdns address from outside my network, it is returning an IPv6 address and no IPv4 address. Is this and ISP issue?
