    ASUS RT-AC86U - NEW - Firmware version 3.0.0.4.384_81792 (14.04.2020)

Exactly - you can set fixed DFS channel, but router has to change it when it detects radar signal in that channel range, usually to non-DFS channels (36-48 here in EU), doesn't change back until reboot (at least from my experience). It depends on manufacturer too, some are more sensitive to this...

    ASUS RT-AC86U - NEW - Firmware version 3.0.0.4.384_81792 (14.04.2020)

I have set channel 100 (DFS) as fixed and Smart Connect is working.. but don't have any radars nearby (so it doesn't get changed).

AC86U USB Drives not recognized & Time Machine not working

.. and pray after few weeks that your Time Machine backups still will be usable/not corrupted. Been there, done that.

Asus RT-AC86U not getting maximum speeds on gigabit fibre

The best thing would be putting ISP box (Homehub) in "bridge mode" or passthrough (if possible) and let RT-AC86U connect/authenticate directly to the ISP network (PPoE).

Asus RT-AC86U not getting maximum speeds on gigabit fibre

I'm getting over 750 Mbps on Macbook Pro 2018 (3x3 WiFi AC) with RT-AC86U on gigabit internet connection, you have Macbook Air 2013, which has 2x2 WiFi AC (and one of the first Broadcom implementations), your speeds are adequate.

    ASUS RT-AC86U - NEW - Firmware version 3.0.0.4.384_81792 (14.04.2020)

My daughter just came home, her iPhone 7 (with latest iOS) connected to 2.4 GHz initially, after two minutes was on 5 GHz automatically (Smart Connect active).. the oldest iOS/iPadOS device we have is iPad Air 2 (and then mentioned iPhone 7), also without any issues.

    rt-ac86u Updated Firmware Mar 10 2020 / Current Version : 3.0.0.4.384_81352-g9910ab0

It took Asus quite a time, but finally.. Netgear supported Smart Connect with user selected/fixed channels for a while on their Broadcom WiFi routers.

Noob question about SMB1 vs SMB2

If you want to use SMB protocol for Time Machine backups, you'll need SMB 3.02 with specific Apple extensions at minimum (that was the version introduced in MacOS Sierra, the first one with Time Machine SMB support).. and no consumer router offers that out-of-the-box, everyone uses AFP protocol...

One of my RT-AC86Us died and shipped to Asus...

When it was manufactured - 2017 or 2018? As 2017 batch seemed to be more reliable, at least according to this forum..

Unhappy with AiMesh? - Try traditional AP mode if wired backhaul available

I'm using RT-AC86U (as a test) with 32799 firmware (it's the latest version with stable auto channel selection without frequent hopping), have about 15 Apple devices (Macbook Pros, iMacs, iPhones, iPads, AppleTV), most of them are wireless (just iMacs, AppleTV and one Mac mini server are wired)...

Unhappy with AiMesh? - Try traditional AP mode if wired backhaul available

I just checked in Apple documentation, macOS (as of now) doesn't use 802.11k/v/r extensions.. but in iOS/iPadOS they are all supported (at least on recent devices - iPhone 6s/iPad Air 2 and later).

Unhappy with AiMesh? - Try traditional AP mode if wired backhaul available

macOS doesn't support 802.11k - just for your information.. btw, Apple Airport router is separating guest network to its own VLAN (so the guest network is isolated on other Airport APs too).
  13. Q

Really disappointed with AiMesh, I switched to something else

macOS has similar treshold for 5GHz band selection -68 dBm..

Thank you for your advice, but it still doesn't answer my question.

    [Asus RT-AX88U] Experiences & Discussion

Question for AX88 owners - does the latest Asuswrt firmware still "hopping" through WiFi channels every hour when Smart Connect is enabled (Auto WiFi channels selection is active and can't be disabled)? AC86 suffers from it in last few firmwares (starting with 45xxx).
  16. Q

    ASUS RT-AC86U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.384_81351

And if you really want to use Smart Connect/single SSID, you might revert to 32799 firmware.. it's stable (if you don't use AiMesh) and without endless scanning/hopping WiFi channels. Sad thing is, I can buy TP-Link C2300 (same CPU, WiFi, RAM) at the half price of RT-86U if I don't need things...

Really disappointed with AiMesh, I switched to something else

I just don't understand why router manufacturers don't have guest network in separate subnet by default (the only one I'm aware of is discontinued Apple Airport), that's the best isolation! At least Asuswrt Merlin can do it with scripts, or OpenWRT (but that's hardly user friendly for average Joe).
  18. Q

    ASUS RT-AC86U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.384_81351

I don't know where you got the idea that I installed untested device at the customer site, RT-AC86U is lying here on the shelf, I was just curious to test it.. I just compared "better" Asus to "inferior" Netgear (R7000P has previous CPU generation like RT-AC68U/R7000).
  19. Q

    ASUS RT-AC86U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.384_81351

That's nice, but excuse me, I do expect from 150 EUR router (which is/was allegedly top of the AC line) such basic functionality as single SSID working without such issues (and reading ton of threads/posts which firmware build is at least stable).. the quality of Asuswrt firmware has gone south...
  20. Q

    ASUS RT-AC86U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.384_81351

And even that version is hopping through channels almost every hour (if you want to use single SSID/Smart Connect).. Asus could implement Smart Connect with user selected fixed channels (like Netgear has on Broadcom models).
