Asus locking down routers to comply with new FCC rules

never seen that before, very interesting. i guess at this point we can only wait and see how things go. i hope the manufacturers can figure out the least obstructive way to go about things, but this whole situation has left me awfully pessimistic. i know i'm being quick to lay blame, but it...

Asus locking down routers to comply with new FCC rules

so essentially they could provide wireless binaries that are region locked. then they'd have to maintain different firmwares for each driver. would they not still then have to lock the firmware to prevent people from compiling with a wireless driver of their choosing? pretty much from where...

Synology VPN Server VS ASUS N66U VPN Server

depends on your upload and possibly how much you have going on with your NAS. the router doesn't have much to do, so if your upload is 10mbit or less, i'd let the router do the work and leave your NAS to do what it does best.

    [HowTO] WPA2 Enterprise EAP-TTLS,PAP

well, i missed the bit that this only works with win7 using Intel cards. i gave up on using my usb linksys 5ghz usb card in the win8 desktop and have tried using an intel centrino N-2230 (2.4ghz), but apparently i fail at windows. my settings appear to be correct. when i try to connect, i...

Asus locking down routers to comply with new FCC rules

how do you lock the bootloader without also locking the firmware? how do you lock the firmware without killing support for 3rd party firmware? [edit/] fixing country codes is obviously not a viable option since the bootloaders in the US have been US since before Netgear sued Asus. in Asus...

    [HowTO] WPA2 Enterprise EAP-TTLS,PAP

well, everything works great with my phone over 2.4ghz. i had to reboot my phone first or it wouldn't see the cert, kinda weird, but otherwise worked quickly and easily. but FFS, win8 is being such a pain in the butt. i will try using my 5ghz usb card on a win7 machine next, must run an errand...

    [HowTO] WPA2 Enterprise EAP-TTLS,PAP

i had to create the folder /opt/var/run/radius or it would fail to start from init.d

Asus locking down routers to comply with new FCC rules

i think the manufacturers will see that all paths lead to a fine from the FCC and we'll be locked in before the cutoff date even comes to pass. Asus might try as many options as they can before then, considering how they've genuinely embraced the open source community and they're the first...

Asus locking down routers to comply with new FCC rules

because i don't want to be locked into stock firmware. [edit/] anybody think this will play out better for the rest of the world if the US goes into full lockdown ?

More questions on DDNS behind two routers/multiple NAT?

1.) some ddns client implementations like on the routers appear to tell the ddns service the IP of the wan interface while others use wherever they see the traffic originate from, ie. wget method 2.) openvpn uses static routes; use the regular lan ip to access devices 3.) those services...

    [HowTO] WPA2 Enterprise EAP-TTLS,PAP

few things to note while i am generating a DH key (WHY OH WHY DID I NOT DO THIS FROM A COMPUTER), - do everything one line at a time, after the initial installation. lots of things require user input. - change "Name of Your Certificate" to whatever openssl dhparam -check -text -2 2048...

    Wifi advice

i like azazel1024's router suggestion, but i agree with captainstx regarding SSID usage, UNLESS those tp-link models have that feature that let's you set a signal threshold at which clients are punted, allowing them to reconnect to a better AP. afaik, it's only in some pretty recent wireless...

Asus locking down routers to comply with new FCC rules

the situation is dire enough that i'm thinking we're at the point where US citizens need to be writing to their senators and get this FCC thing reversed or the language changed. retailers and manufacturers both should be fighting this tooth and nail. in the interim, i agree that contacting...

Asus locking down routers to comply with new FCC rules

1000 views later and no bites, is the situation really that bad for the competition? remember to thank Netgear for the FCC taking a closer look at soho router localization. wouldn't it suck for their users if they didn't have ddwrt?

    wmm apsd?

optimize ack is the same thing as ddwrt no ack. my experience with no ack is that SSL based communications are more likely to error and i've actually seen a very slight bandwidth decrease with it enabled. (.25mb/s) i understand that in theory it should be an improvement for either tcp or udp...

    RT-N66R LAN Failure

my n66r from best buy was one of the original n66 revisions with the wrong switchport; the kind designed for STP plugs which are slightly larger than UTP, so my UTP plugs sat loosely in the jack. if you feel you have this error you should contact ASUS and they will replace them for you.
