I'm getting ready to configure a home VPN server so I can redirect my Internet traffic when I'm away from home on public wifi, hotel network, etc. I have 2 devices that have the ability to run a VPN server. 1) My Synology DS213 and 3) my ASUS N66U Wireless router. I have a Uverse router that passes traffic to my N66U. So I'll have to open ports on my Uverse router and I'm comfortable doing that. I'll also have to setup a DDNS, which isn't a problem. I'm planning to use L2TP or OpenVPN for security reasons. I've just never setup a VPN server before and wanted to get some feedback before I start.

My main question is, which device do you guys recommend using for my VPN server? Are there pros/cons to using one over the other? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I did setup OpenVPN on my Asus RT-N66U and Synology DS-214+ (on a different port). It appears to me that the Synology VPN is more responsive than the Asus, better CPU?

Sometime, I am not able to connect reliably or at all because the hotel or vacation home IP address range is the same as my home network IP address, that is 192.168.1.xxx. I think I would have to change my home network IP address range to something not as common.

For convenience and speed, I prefer to use a low-cost VPN provider instead of my home network (Private Tunnel). It is faster and more convenient.

depends on your upload and possibly how much you have going on with your NAS. the router doesn't have much to do, so if your upload is 10mbit or less, i'd let the router do the work and leave your NAS to do what it does best.

I was using my Synology to do VPN due to my old router wasn't powerful enough to run a VPN server. While doing it, I found out that for the Synology box to do anything at all, it needs to first spin up its disks.

Now that I have got a Asus RT-AC68u, I've put as much on the router as possible, including VPN.

Personally I feel if the always-on router is up to the job, then let the NAS rest.
