Beta [FORK] [DSL] [TESTERS] GNUton's Alpha/Beta Merlin builds

Loaded 388.1_0-gnuton0_alpha1 (without CFE flash) on TUF-AX5400. Build seems stable. The current CFE on my router is 1.0.0.2 per the Tools page. Does anyone have a different version on the TUF-AX5400? Did notice that the WL drivers have different dates and suffixes. Curious why that would...

    Release ASUS TUF-AX5400 Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388.21224 (2022/10/21)

Using Gnuton's 386.07_2-gnuton1 build on my TUF-AX5400 with great result. @Igs this is a supported fork of AsusWrt Merlin to get some additional routers covered as explained above. I have been on the Gnuton build for more than a month with no issues. In the past, I had some older Asus routers...

    Showing the love, Not!

It is interesting which routers Asus prioritizes and which ones not. The ROG STRIX GS-AX3000 has a very pfunny name, and also gets no love at all. Nearly bought one because they were heavily discounted. Glad I did not as the ROG STRIX GS-AX3000 has not had a firmware update in more than a...

    Release ASUS TUF-AX5400 Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388.21224 (2022/10/21)

The file name says COMBO. Not sure what Asus is doing in their content or compilation.

    Release ASUS TUF-AX5400 Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388.21224 (2022/10/21)

Look at the firmware image itself. NOT ram on the router. The 388 firmware image from Asus 91.99 MBytes, while the old 386 images were all around 53.85 MBytes. Why would the firmware image double in size???

    Release ASUS TUF-AX5400 Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388.21224 (2022/10/21)

The firmware has the nomenclature "combo" in the file name. Is this firmware being used for multiple variants? Why did the size of the firmware double?

Plus an ever changing mix of compiled and source code elements with ever changing directory locations.

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.7 is now available for all Gnuton's models too

386.07_2-gnuton1 is a very solid build on my TUF-AX5400. Very stable over 3 weeks with no debug entries in the log file. Very good build.

    Router temperatures

I have a router running OpenWRT using the MediaTek MT7622 SoC, which is one generation later than your MT7621 and 50% faster. It is a very weak CPU (but does not run very hot) and I would not recommend it to anyone. Broadcom chips cost more but they are better chips by far. The only advantage...

Any (Merlin) love for the Asus RT-AX82U?

Supported by Gnuton fork: https://github.com/gnuton/asuswrt-merlin.ng/releases Not sure why Asus does not use 1 firmware release and query the CFE, but instead they appear to use many firmware releases for these variants and query the CFE.

TUF-AX3000 V2 coming to a store near you, maybe

Agree with you that the specific radio chip + amplifier (and antenna design) are the drivers of range. Great point on OFDMA for AX clients. Nice short article here: https://www.networkworld.com/article/3366216/what-s-the-difference-between-ofdma-and-mu-mimo-in-11ax.html Thanks for your post!

TUF-AX3000 V2 coming to a store near you, maybe

MSRP for the Asus TUF-AX3000 V2 is allegedly going to be 199 USD approximately. That is about the same as the model it replaces, which commonly sells for 159 - 179 USD and on occasion as low as 139 USD. So yes, if someone is charging 348 USD that is a ripoff of about 75%. This platform costs...

TUF-AX3000 V2 coming to a store near you, maybe

Please explain how that would work. If I have a laptop that is 2x2 MIMO or an Amazon Fire Stick that is 2x2 MIMO, how does a 3x3 or 4x4 router help me? Update, some of the Asus routers are MU-MIMO, meaning that instead of the devices all connecting to the 1st antenna, the devices could connect...

TUF-AX3000 V2 coming to a store near you, maybe

Most of our IoT devices are only 1 or 2 streams and cannot benefit from 4x4 or 3x3 routers. Even late model laptops are typically just 2x2. As an example, even the highest end Apple laptops are 2x2 and only 80MHz (not even using 160MHz channel width). The Sony PS5 has the same specs as...

TUF-AX3000 V2 coming to a store near you, maybe

The soon to hit the market Asus TUF-AX3000 V2 looks like a winner. See tear down video: The specs look solid: 2.5Gbps WAN port, 1.7GHz BCM6756 quad-core processor and BCM53134 switch. Wireless duties handled by BCM6756 SoC. This router seems a little future-proof with good specs. My...

Why DNS over TLS is so important, and if you are not using it you should be

Manual. Do not use auto settings.

Why DNS over TLS is so important, and if you are not using it you should be

Agree. Been running DoT for maybe 3 years. Started out running on Tomato. Now on Asus Merlin. Config is important as you want to select DNS providers with a presence near you.

Why DNS over TLS is so important, and if you are not using it you should be

For me, port 53 gets hijacked and port 853 does not.
  19. J

Why DNS over TLS is so important, and if you are not using it you should be

Sometimes that is because of the response time of the DNS server.

Why DNS over TLS is so important, and if you are not using it you should be

Thanks for your post. Totally agree that monetization of things that we don't pay for is gonna happen. The only point I was making about data collection is that players like Google Quad9 and Cloudfare are very specific about how long they keep DNS logs and what they do with it. Cloudfare is...
