    I wouldn't use auto channel setting. Make sure your selected channel is least interfered with your neighbors. Run some thing like Acrylic or inSSIDer to survey your neighborhood regarding WiFi signal congestion specially in 2.4GHz.

    Are you talking about ip your ISP give for WAN port? Or talking about ip handled by DHCP in your router for connected device? In this case your friend is right. If you mess with WAN ip, you could lose Internet connection.

    Broadcom chips are known for running hot. If that is your issue and makes you feel uncomfortable, you can provide some extra cooling or switch to routers which use non-Broadcom chips. Nothing is perfect in this world. Always gain some lose some, that's life. Nothing lasts forever either...

    IMO, your router is in unknown state. Are you sure the flash was completed? Did you command 'ipconfig /all' ? What do you see there? What is gateway address?
