    I wouldn't use auto channel setting. Make sure your selected channel is least interfered with your neighbors. Run some thing like Acrylic or inSSIDer to survey your neighborhood regarding WiFi signal congestion specially in 2.4GHz.

    Are you talking about ip your ISP give for WAN port? Or talking about ip handled by DHCP in your router for connected device? In this case your friend is right. If you mess with WAN ip, you could lose Internet connection.
