    RT-AC86U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.384_21045

Relatively new to ASUS routers and still not used to these monthly updates, in this case two updates within one week. Old school really as one or two firmware update per year is what used to be the norm. Unless the security fixes are so critical to necessitate frequent updates??

    auto-update firmware or email notifications?

Critical updates only and that is usually a couple of days after its released. There is, as an example, a reason for Windows 10 Pro to be updated as part of the enterprise IT policy and not immediately following Microsoft releases. Bad updates had happened before and its a lot less messy to...

    RT-AC86U 3.0.0.4.384_20942-ge38bead

Still monitoring and will wait for a two further weeks before completing a manual check on the new firmware (which is already on the release server). The yellow ! is not showing yet. This will provide insights into how often the router will check for new firmware (wish there is an option)...

    RT-AC86U 3.0.0.4.384_20942-ge38bead

Interesting point. We had suspected its the app that is scheduling the auto update. Could be something else too.

    auto-update firmware or email notifications?

Well spoken. The fact that routers run 24x7 just amplifies the risks. The possibility of pushing out a 'wrong' development version of a firmware onto the release server, or malicious firmware due to lapse in release server security, is not a risk that should even to considered over expediency.

    RT-AC86U 3.0.0.4.384_20942-ge38bead

The current router came with 382_18848 out of the box. It was a second AC86U. Was planning to let this firmware run for a week or two to let the hardware 'burn in'. However, it decided to automatically update to 384_20467 a few hours after unboxing, after the ASUS app was used (and the app was...

    RT-AC86U 3.0.0.4.384_20942-ge38bead

Running stock ASUS firmware on the AC-86U. The router has yet to update itself from 384_20648 to 384_20942. Running sort of experiment to confirm if or when it will update itself, if ever ;)

    RT-AC86U 3.0.0.4.384_20942-ge38bead

Would like to have details of an automatic firmware upgrade, except if using the mobile app where it will schedule an update at the next hour mark. The AC86U had not yet prompted an update is available, the last check was a couple of hours before 384_20942 was published. Going to wait out and...

    pushed firmware update

Did you configured or managed the router with the ASUS app? It is suspected to schedule a firmware update when one is available.

[RT-AC86U] what are the differences between European and Asian variants?

Most (if not all) 'Asian' versions are actually China region version. There is a separate Asia region version sold and the price is a lot more expensive.

4/15 to 4/30 lapse in AiProtection activity?

Been monitoring this issue since your post. AiProtection recorded events for around 3 days and then went silent. After over one week, the router (AC86U on the latest firmware) updated its signature and rebooted. Then events were recorded for around 3 days again and went silent afterwards...

ASUS Router iOS App V 1.0.0.0.95 - How to remove some Offline Clients

The offline list is visible in the web UI uder LAN settings. The part where you can click on a client and assign static IP address. No longer using the ASUS app past couple of weeks now as it gave nothing but trouble, including silent automatic firmware update.

After few years with Asus routers I'm done with this.

It depends on the specific router. The official firmware change logs the past couple of releases did indicate display issues fix, etc. Only until the last firmware, was for the case of the AC86U, it went well.

After few years with Asus routers I'm done with this.

In agreement here. Most consumer routers are no better than ASUS. Exception being AirPorts which are very stable. Been using a number of AirPorts since one of the early models way way back and it had been setup and forget. You can downgrade and upgrade firmware versions in any manner you...

    RT-AC86U and traffic analyzer

Traffic analyzer was properly fixed in 384_20648. Works as it is supposed to be. Its only the web history that stops recording after a couple of days and guessing this will get fixed in the next release.

RT-AC66U random restarts multiple times per day (I have logs!)

The first thing to suspect is router getting too hot. Causes could be vents clogged with dust or stacking the router on top of the modem. Should this not be the case, its probably a failing power adapter. Hardware failure is probable but I would try to eliminate the first two first.

    RT-AC86U f/w 3.0.0.4.384_20648 and ShieldsUp!

Test results were as expected and did not power cycle the router. Did a restore to factory and reconfigure on the safe side. Not seeing what you had reported. @arthurlien 384_20648 on the AC86U seems to be looking good. Appreciate the work the firmware team had put into this release, and its...

    RT-AC88U 5ghz up and down

Is the control channel set to auto and when you click on it, the list of radio channels is not there? When it happens is the web administration page loading slowly? Had a similar issue, and initially from a couple of days, it went to hours between reboots. And this slow degradation happened...

[Official Release] AiMesh Firmware v3.0.0.4.384.20308 for All Supported Products

Agreed. Unless someone else post otherwise, the app is going at some point break ASUS router line good reputation. Even experienced vendors with decades of software development experiences and huge software budgets, had learnt hard lessons with automatic software updates.

[Official Release] AiMesh Firmware v3.0.0.4.384.20308 for All Supported Products

Can now suspect, with some level of certainty, that the automatic upgrade seems to point to the ASUS app. With the release of the latest firmware, left the router as it is for a day and the yellow flashing indicator (new firmware available) did not show up. Then proceeded to check firmware and...
