Help with choosing decent CCTV ip camera for a budget DIY NAS+NVR

Thanks @degrub - I actually don't want slower access, so if connecting a DAS to usb means slower access / speeds, then I'd rather avoid it. One option I was thinking of is to somehow pull the SATA cable from the inside to the outside and place a 3.5" hard drive on the outside, but not only...

Help with choosing decent CCTV ip camera for a budget DIY NAS+NVR

Thanks @Tech9, I see what you mean with regards to the complexity of Linux vs windows and yes I agree with what you're saying as I'm very used to Windows and not Linux. But @Tech Junky made the setup and the availability of software sound very easy and his reasons were that whereas Linux was...

Help with choosing decent CCTV ip camera for a budget DIY NAS+NVR

I'm really sorry @Tech9, but I don't understand what the issue is. Surely on an open forum, I'm allowed to ask questions and clarify why someone thinks that one solution is better than another and with so many variables and spending of hundreds of pounds, that I choose the right option? Please...

Help with choosing decent CCTV ip camera for a budget DIY NAS+NVR

    Thanks buddy. I'm looking between 1 or 2 bay. But am I right that the following would be the approx. costs of the whole setup? Dell PC = £170 Enclosure/DAS = £100 2 x 4TB WD Purple Drives = £200 (approx.) 4 x 5mp Cameras = £300 (approx.) Cables + Accessories = £100 (approx.)

Help with choosing decent CCTV ip camera for a budget DIY NAS+NVR

That's brilliant, thanks so much. I really look forward to the DIY setup. It'll be well worth it. One thing is that you mentioned that due to this PC type being very small, I would need to get a DAS. Can you please recommend a cheap DAS?

Help with choosing decent CCTV ip camera for a budget DIY NAS+NVR

Ahh, well Linux it is then :). Just to let you know, that I've bought a Dell Optiplex 7050 micro MFF i5 7500T with 16gb ram and 256gb SSD. It currently has Win 10 pro installed.

Help with choosing decent CCTV ip camera for a budget DIY NAS+NVR

Ahh right. But how would that work in terms of having a NAS and an NVR device? Because I want to be able to use it for storage too, so surely I'd need Windows for that?

Help with choosing decent CCTV ip camera for a budget DIY NAS+NVR

Thanks Tech Junky. But which operating system is better for CCTV? Windows or Linux? or does it not matter?

Help with choosing decent CCTV ip camera for a budget DIY NAS+NVR

Thanks bbunge. I assume you're based in USA, because in UK the Amcrest cameras are very expensive - £89.99 per camera. You've mentioned Debian and Zoneminder, but I'm used to windows and these are Linux apps?

Help with choosing decent CCTV ip camera for a budget DIY NAS+NVR

Hello everyone. Thanks to a lot of support and help from some of the forum users on HERE, I now have a better understanding and confidence in building my own setup of 4 cameras, NVR and a NAS combined (4tb hdd). One of the recommendations has been to get a Dell Micro 7050 (i5-6500T processor)...

I' ve quit the ideea of USB hdd to router and want to buy a NAS

Thanks to both of you for all your advice. I'm going to take some timeout to mull things over and once I've decided whether I want a DAS and small PC or a large PC, but no DAS, I will then go ahead and make a purchase. I just kindly request whether you can please recommend some decent quality...

I' ve quit the ideea of USB hdd to router and want to buy a NAS

I see what you mean. Can you recommend a budget DAS? Although to be honest, I don't know if there's any point in going for a DAS, especially if my whole goal was to have a small size pc because all a DAS would do is it would be in another enclosure, so it sounds like I need to go for a...

I' ve quit the ideea of USB hdd to router and want to buy a NAS

So for any such files, I would autorun mcebuddy to convert them directly on the NAS? I'm a little confused with the DAS/NAS - Are you saying that I would need to power a PC such as the DELL, then also power a seperate external HDD? Wouldn't that cost a lot of money in energy, especially in...

I' ve quit the ideea of USB hdd to router and want to buy a NAS

Thanks guys....This sounds absolutely brilliant! I know we've mentioned about transcoding before, but one problem I found with my current Asus router with a usb flash disk was that some movies won't play on the TV. I'm assuming that this is because some video formats have to be transcoded...

I' ve quit the ideea of USB hdd to router and want to buy a NAS

I'd be willing to do that, but I need to understand whether after adding more ram and an external, will this system be powerful enough to able to work as a NAS and a 4 camera (5mp) cctv system?

I' ve quit the ideea of USB hdd to router and want to buy a NAS

Thanks @Tech9 @Tech Junky @sfx2000. I just didn't realise how big that PC was. The Dell and the Lenovo look a lot better and easier to put on a shelf. For example like this DELL I know you mention that I won't be able to expand internal storage, but surely if I wanted more storage, I can...

I' ve quit the ideea of USB hdd to router and want to buy a NAS

Are you referring to something like this? :- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203885151223?hash=item2f788083f7%3Ag%3AJYAAAOSwBP1iQs89&LH_BIN=1 BTW this is not 6500, but actually 6600 (3.9Ghz), so I assume it's a little more powerful? Would this do the job as a NAS and CCTV system?

I' ve quit the ideea of USB hdd to router and want to buy a NAS

Yes, this sounds like my type of setup as it gives me a lot of flexibility and power. Leaving out the hard drive, can you please give me a link to any ebay PCs that you think can manage such a setup as I want to understand the type of specs we're talking about. One setup can be for 1080p and...

I' ve quit the ideea of USB hdd to router and want to buy a NAS

I'm willing to wire it up, but having read your post, I'm now doubting myself and questioning whether I really need a 4k camera system or not. From seeing YouTube videos, I don't think I'll notice a huge difference in terms of picture quality between a 1080p and a 4k system - The downside would...
