Perplexing Problem: Managed Switch shows as offline but is in fact working.

I noticed before switching my TP-Link to static that it would come up with its previous DHCP IP for a certain amount of time, then it would give up and have no IP at all if it couldn't get a DHCP response (or maybe it went to a default 192.168 or something). I suspect that is probably the case...

    Windows 12 Subscription? What the...

Less and less options these days, I can't even think of a "local" PC shop anymore. I never thought I'd miss CompUSA but they've been gone like 10 years (and that wasn't even really a local shop). We have no Frys around here, and the mom and pop places are long gone. I do stop in Adorama and...

    Windows 12 Subscription? What the...

My latest work laptop went to something along those lines, it comes brand new sealed from Lenovo but they've pre-registered some identifier in it. When you get to windows setup it detects that it is a managed PC and takes you to a custom login screen, you sign in with work credentials, and it...

    Newbie Needs Clear Answers/Direction Please!

Depends how far down the rabbit hole you want to go. People who want a highly flexible and semi-pro setup will be looking at a miniPC running PFSense or Opnsense and some standalone APs and switches. Or a pre-built wired only router from Ubiquiti, Mikrotik, TP-Link, etc along with matching...

    Newbie Needs Clear Answers/Direction Please!

I think you need to figure out for sure what can and cannot be wired (and where the router has to be located), then can figure out the best method. Depending how deep you want to get into it, you can run wire behind crown or baseboard molding and have it run to a nice wall jack. Have done that...

    Windows 12 Subscription? What the...

Eh even BestBuy and Staples (the only two places that really have it around here anymore) everything is a card for 365 and somewhere mixed in you may or may not find a card to bring to the register for them to go out back and get you the dusty perpetual box. Personally I can't see paying $440...

Perplexing Problem: Managed Switch shows as offline but is in fact working.

Static IP on network devices is a good idea. The switch comes online faster than the router, probably wasn't able to grab a DHCP IP, and gave up. Reboot made it try again (now that the router was online) and it got one. The switch will always work, the IP address is just for the management...

Firmware upgrade 388.3 to 388.4 for RT-AX88u Pro Not Taking

Personally I still don't think your router is in a good state, I would want to wipe it and start over. I've never had an issue with upgrading with lots of clients, switches, etc attached. But if it is working fine, then you can play it by year, your call obviously.

    Windows 12 Subscription? What the...

More referring to via MS website, pretty buried in there typically, especially for home versions, and when you do find it often it is the student version without Outlook etc.. Also I used to be able to get perpetual licenses via the company's Home Use Program for $10 (then it went to $15) now...

    Windows 12 Subscription? What the...

The average person is just going to buy the $5 or $10 key they see advertised on facebook, especially when it links through a site like bleepingcomputer, groupon, zdnet, etc and appears "legit". But yes there are and always have been many ways around activation, though it is a lot harder now...

    Windows 12 Subscription? What the...

Nope, not forcing anything for sure, but certainly pushing it heavily as the main option and gradually making it harder and harder to find the perpetual license options (and reducing the duration of support too). The direction is clear, just a matter of how far they'll take it and how strict...

SOLVED: very asymmetric UL/DL speed on 2.5G line

Only thing I can think is when you try to exceed 1G upload, there is heavy packet loss resulting in the very low upload speed. Look for a speed test app/site that reports packet loss and see. But the fact that you can get 900M upload from a 1G LAN device points more toward your router or LAN...

    192.168.0./24?

First, you would need to use 192.168.0.0/24, as 0.1/24 is not a valid subnet. But if you want just certain IPs to hit the VPN, then just create entries for those and leave off the /24. The default when a rule isn't matched is to go to the WAN and bypass VPN. If you wanted to simplify it a bit...

    Windows 12 Subscription? What the...

Yeah we have a unix jump server which for logging into and switching between multiple routers, running scripts, etc is very useful. But that's all I use it for at work. All our office docs use various proprietary add-ons for identity confirmation, classifying the sensitivity of documents...

    Windows 12 Subscription? What the...

I already pay for MS 365 (actually had a glitch that after paying for 2 years at $40 per year, it gave me another 3 free just by enabling and disabling auto-renew repeatedly). But if they added windows for another $3 to $5 a year or something like that, it might make sense. Though to date, the...

    Windows 12 Subscription? What the...

Linux has its place, but it just isn't a viable alternative for the vast majority of users. I've been a computer guy for decades and I wouldn't run it as my primary OS. Every time I've toyed with the idea it is just a long process of finding stuff that "kinda works like" software on windows or...

    Newbie Needs Clear Answers/Direction Please!

Was a fun hobby until the Multipick Kronos came along and took all the challenge out of it. Though it is still fun to show people just how quickly I can get into their house. If you can hardwire the ONT to a router in the living room position, that should give you wifi coverage in the entire...

SOLVED: very asymmetric UL/DL speed on 2.5G line

Dunno about your ISP but every one I've dealt with that will result in you paying a pretty hefty charge. If it uses PPPoE, have you made sure the MTU value on your Asus has been set to the correct size? Shouldn't have that big of an impact on speed but worth checking. Since it uses PPPoE you...

    Windows 12 Subscription? What the...

It may have been coincidence but it was right around the time of the name change to MS that they started offering corporate licenses that included Windows and office (and hosted email if you wanted it). I assumed that was the reason for the change, but pure speculation. Makes sense though, as...

Freeware to identify fake USB drives

Samsung has a good one for their microSD cards and thumb drives too (I'm assuming other vendors probably do too, that's just the only one I've used). Before there were tools available I'd either use SD card formatter and do an overwrite, or just copy like a 30 gig file. All the fakes were like...
