    Content Filtering -ZyWall USG series

USG series content filtering is designed to be used with a 3rd party subscription to Bluecoat. You can setup individual website filters, but I haven't tested to see if it has the same intelligence as your 2+. I use OpenDNS for content filtering and IMO its the best low cost option. OpenDNS...

Synology DS211 or Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra 2?

Ultra 2 r/w speed will saturate most desktop GigE controllers. The online tests you read showing 100MB/s speed are not easily reproducable using most desktop GigE controllers.

Synology DS211 or Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra 2?

Ultra 2 uses a x64 Intel Atom CPU. Synology DS212 uses a Marvell ARM based CPU. Real world performance of both units is excellent. Personally, I prefer Readynas. Simply because they offer a stronger warranty, generally more reliable OS and great forum support. Where Readynas falls...

    Network monitoring/Security - I was hacked?

So no wireless in that cable modem so that clears you having an unknown open Wifi connection.

    Network monitoring/Security - I was hacked?

You can easily block all P2P activity by using OpenDNS as your DNS. You'll want to enforce a rule requiring all DNS requests (port 53) to go to OpenDNS otherwise clever people will manually change DNS settings on their client to use whomever they wish and bypass OpenDNS filtering. If the "bad...

    Network monitoring/Security - I was hacked?

So, how was that 2011 Russian "Comedy" aka "porn"? Kidding. So you've virus scanned all PC's and found no signs of malware? Did you also scan for rootkits? Use Kaspersky TDSS to do that. Are all PC's fully patched? Use Secunia PSI to keep an eye on your PC security status. What...

    Internet sharing with multiple interfaces.

My vote is to purchase an "appliance" to handle your needs. I haven't used Cradlepoint, but I've done similar with a Zyxel USG. Cradlepoint seems to support more USB cellular modems. I'm sure there are others, just try to avoid typical consumer gear.

FYI- Synology launches DSM 4 (the NAS OS)

There's many things I don't care for with Dropbox. One being the deduplication they do across accounts. I don't mind dedup across my accounts to save me $$ in storage and upload times, but I don't want my data dedup'd against other users. Dropbox has also had a host of questionable security...

FYI- Synology launches DSM 4 (the NAS OS)

With the Syno NAS Cloudstation app, my worry is transport encryption. Further without encryption I imagine the conenction/handshake is done in the clear which could reveal to a hacker how to connect to your NAS..... On the other hand, data at rest is on your Syno NAS located in your facility...

FYI- Synology launches DSM 4 (the NAS OS)

I assume you saw my note about Cloudstation not being encrypted? Check this out on Syno forums. People are using the feature request forum to request end to end encryption. Really pathetic that Synology engineers would allow data to transition the Internet unencrypted. We're not talking...

Looking for small business wireless firewall with VLAN features

Zyxel USG100 Four LAN ports on board that can be set to different zones. Supports VLAN and a host of other features. Also supports dual WAN for load balance/failover. Get 2x Wifi access points. This way as wireless tech changes you can change AP's without needing a whole new endpoint.

    RAID disks spinning up

Keep an eye on that config. Verify that the Synology backup is working and properly copying files. I've been down the road with Synology before and they sometimes do some stupid things. i.e. their DSM4 firmware supports Cloud Station (as they call it). You sync your stuff over the Net to the...

    RAID disks spinning up

+1. Seriously, just disable spindown. Make sure the NAS is in a well ventilated area and connect it to a UPS. Backup data to an external source (don't rely on RAID as backup). Run it until it dies. You'll likely get years out of it unless the disks are crap. Knowing WD they used Green...

    RAID disks spinning up

One after the other is fairly normal. Takes only a few seconds for my Readynas to spinup Seagate ES2 disks.

    Condo Assoc Networking Advice

Trust me when I say you are barking up the wrong tree, especially when trying to use the level of equipment you selected. Regarding Cox, have you thought about what will happen if you have P2P users violating DMCA? Continued violations will get your pipe disconnected and worse, legal letters...
