Very Basic Q: Where to Place Router and NAS

Why would you put the NAS low? I just discovered I can drill a hole from closet upwards and come out in the 3rd floor walk-in closet (really a room itself). This may allow me to leave router in present location with NAS on a different floor. Would still leave wireless connection to the PC...

Very Basic Q: Where to Place Router and NAS

Would you all see any problem moving both the router and the NAS into a bedroom closet, assuming I can still get good connectivity? What about the idea of using the old Linksys router as a wireless bridge and connecting the NAS to that? Both of those could go out of site in an upstairs closet.

Very Basic Q: Where to Place Router and NAS

Ron: Thanks. By safest do you mean out of the way? I would like to put the NAS somewhere it wouldn't be easily seen or bumped. Yes, I do intend to get a UPS, which brings up the issue of getting to an outlet from the location where I place the NAS...

Very Basic Q: Where to Place Router and NAS

After more than a year, I've finally decided to purchase a NAS. My question involves where to physically place the router and the NAS. I searched through the forums, but cannot find much on my particular question. Some background: We live in a large, 3 story home. Right now, our router...

    RT-N66U: Settings Advice

My understanding is 5GHz will likely be less populated, but the range will not extend very far. My Macbook Air picks up 5 GHz up to about 25 feet away before switching over to 2.4 GHz.

    RT-N66U: Settings Advice

Joe - I cannot seem to change the admin login name, only the password. I type something over the word admin, but nothing happens when I hit Apply. Thoughts? Also, how do I ensure I am logged out? I clicked logout, but when I go back to 192.168.1.1 I it looks like I am still logged in.

    RT-N66U: Settings Advice

Thanks for the help so far! I got the router set up with no problem, and have much wider coverage throughout my home. However, I have no idea what the appropriate settings are. I searched but could not find a thread in the forums that guides a newbie through a starter set of appropriate...

Replacing Router - How to Document Existing Settings?

About to replace my Linksys WRT54GS relic with an ASUS RT-N66. I know nothing about networks and want to make sure I have all documentation I need about existing network before I pull the plug. I went to the setup page for the Linksys and did a screen print of each menu. Is there anything...

RT-N66 Should I use WPS for Setup?

About to go home and replace my old Linksys with the RT-N66. Am a complete noobie and read some tutorials last night about setting up a network. If I understand correctly, WPS is a shortcut to getting clients enabled and onto the network, but is unsecured. Is this correct? If so, am I better...

NAS + Crash Plan for home Use: Some Questions

Tim - thanks for the reply! Would you recommend a more basic NAS instead? If so, any thoughts on a specific one? Have I 'missed' the purpose of a NAS? Would I better off connecting a USB drive to the router?

NAS + Crash Plan for home Use: Some Questions

Been lurking on Small Net Builder for a few weeks, but am pretty overwhelmed. I am thinking I want to get a NAS to use as a place from which to share media and to create a backup. Here are my needs: 1) Create a reliable, consistent, automated backup for digital photos and important files...
