Mini ITX Case with 5 bays?

ITX with 5 bays? Is that already close to mATX? Why not mATX with 6 bays? ITX isnt meant for thin net top IMO. Thats why no other company is considering making a big ITX case. Its cheaper to get Acer Easyshare barebone with 4 bays, 1TB included for $299 or even less occasionally onsale.

Simple back up for medical office, help please

I dont mean to go off topic, but should this be addressed with an IT company? Your friend is a business owner who should have hired an IT company to set up a proper infrastructure. After all its a small office it should be extremely easy using off shelf program. So this raise up my next...

Suggestions on building a PS3 centered media distribution network

Great advice, i have gone through the same thing. DLNA has lots of limitations that would never be mainstream. Get one of those mini HTPC or better yet.... get a NMT and call it a day. NMT appliance is gonna be very popular. Budget one thats workable is WDTV.

which of 3 old mobo's to use for NAS?

I dont want to dissapoint you but i have used those ...."firware RAID" They're not HW raid by anymean. And i dont see any performance advantage over the SW raid. So its never appealing to me. I dont want you to face the same wall. And i disagree on the claim of the Intel budget/midrange...

Nas newbie. Moving files within the NAS itself

Thanks for the replies guys I guess that confirms my finding : using Windows Explorer to move files between HDs in NAS would be a ultimate mistake as it streaming the file to the client then back to the NAS. Hence this would be using the network and very slow. I will look into the...

which of 3 old mobo's to use for NAS?

Yes thats what i'm preferring to. I'm just never able to remember the name ... Due to the licensing, zfs wont be available in Linux so we get a forked on with a different name lol....

which of 3 old mobo's to use for NAS?

What are you're seeking from the NAS? Heavy traffic file sharing? I dont see anything promising from that chipset. Once you setup a soft Raid, all those features are out of the windows. Those are purely for Windows.

OS Help - What Am I Trying to Build Here?

What you're looking for is no longer a NAS but a Home Server. As for the OS selection, it greatly depends on the programs/applications you're looking for. I didnt look into those home automation appliance, but i advise you to look for one thats platform independent (either java based or cloud...

Why NAS-to-NAS vs. NAS-to-external USB drive? (and other questions)

I'm sorry for threadjacking. I just have a quick question about the powerline adapter. Which one did you get? and what is the actualy speed when you use it? I'm thinking to get the 85mbps ones for one of my HTPC. Thanks

which of 3 old mobo's to use for NAS?

I would prefer AMD equivalent. I believe AMD has the best bang for buck in budget or mid-range build. I would get a dual core AMD (X2 7750BE?) and a AMD780/790G all in one mobo with at least 6 Satas port. The all in one chipset from AMD is extremely well regarded compared to the Intel...

    Unraid equivalent?

Does anyone know another project thats similar to UnRaid technology? I have been searching but found none available. I believe the key feature that makes UnRaid unique is the expansion capability with redundancy (1 parity drive can support 18 data drive ). So it can grow as your data grows (just...

Nas newbie. Moving files within the NAS itself

Hi all, My NAS is a diy build with Ubuntu 9.04 Server edition. My client is just a lappy with Vista Business edition. I believe my questions are fairly general tho. I'm using my NAS through Samba file server. So i map a network drive to one of my shared directories. And i have been...

Ubuntu 9.04 server Reloading /etc/samba/smb.conf smbd only

I do have dual NICs. However Ubuntu only see 1 (altho at the installation i can see 2 NICs which i chose one to use as default). At least in my /etc/networking/interfaces there are only l0 and eth0. so far killing dhcpclient has stopped the smbd reloading. When i got the reloading msg its...

Ubuntu 9.04 server Reloading /etc/samba/smb.conf smbd only

I find a get around ... by killing dcphclient process, this stops smbd from reloading... But this is not a solution. Any ideas? I noticed few ppl here have installed and used Ubuntu 9.04 server for their NASes. However no one ever encountered this problem?

    Can't make up my mind

For backup only meaning no frequent data accessing, there is a simple solution: Unraid. Its cheap, simple and extremely easy to setup. You can increase the size of backup storage as you go (no need to get 8 1.5tb at once- saving cost). The only cons is its not the fastest Nas setup...

Ubuntu 9.04 server Reloading /etc/samba/smb.conf smbd only

Does anyone find a solution to this? This is the issue with fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04 server. From the installation, i choose Samba and SSH only. As soon as i logged in the keep getting this msg every 5 mins or so. When i do it seems my networking interfaces are being reset.... My static...
