Cheapest device to run VPN server

What type of clients do you plan to connect to your SOHO? If your client(s) support OpenVPN then I think any of the Merlin supported Asus routers could be your VPN server. If you are running an iOS device then the newer AX series routers can be an IPSec VPN server for which iOS has a native client.

always DNS leaked with strict DNS rule setup

I think controlling DNS for Apple devices including iOS is difficult. In iOS 14 they implemented a way for applications to create a DNS security or privacy context that allows the application, among other things, to use DoH See https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2020/10047/ for some of...

    Manually assigned IPv6 DNS server

I am pretty sure Merlin uses dnsmasq to manage the DHCP for IPv6. At least it populates /etc/dnsmasq.conf with things like: Looking at the dnsmasq man page, the syntax for a dchp-host entry is...

    Manually assigned IPv6 DNS server

Setting it on each device is my current work around. But I would much rather manage my network from one place, in this case the ASUS-Merlin router. And I have some devices that do not allow you to have that type of control over their network settings. At present those devices (weather station...

    Manually assigned IPv6 DNS server

The IPv6->IPv6 DNS Setting gives the router the addresses to use when resolving addresses. And that works. But I don’t see a way there or on any other GUI page to make an exception for specific devices. At present all devices get their IPv6 DNS server set to the router’s IPv6 (public by the...

    Manually assigned IPv6 DNS server

I guess I should expand on the above a bit. . . I have found I can replicate the GUI setup for specific IPv4 DNS servers using the CLI, specifically setting things like: But the equivalent for IPv6 does not work for me. I have tried, among other things, the following: and Ideally I’d like to...

    Manually assigned IPv6 DNS server

For IPv4 you can enter a device’s MAC address and manually assign a IPv4 address and a IPv4 DNS server address. Useful for handling some special cases. For a few of my devices that always try IPv6 before IPv4 I would like to be able to assign specific IPv6 DNS server address(es) for them to...

How to prevent LAN devices from obtaining IPv6 addresses?

As @ColinTaylor noted, the IPv6 firewall will block unwanted inbound connections. So the only gripe I see is regarding privacy and those gripes assume that there is one MAC based public IPv6 address on each LAN device that is being used to access the internet. At least on the devices I have that...

AiMesh node does not receive IPv6 from AiMesh router DHCP

It is/was my working hypothesis based on the top level symptoms I recalled after the fact. When the issue occurred I tried to get the WiFi back to a usable state as quickly as possible to reduce the spouse annoyance factor. If/when I get time alone in the house I will go back to the AiMesh...

AiMesh node does not receive IPv6 from AiMesh router DHCP

My impression (I did not take time to really dig into it to confirm) is that the client devices do get IPv6 addresses but that the AiMesh node does not carry the IPv6 traffic. Result is that for devices that prefer IPv6 (like our iPhones) the IPv6 attempt has time out before they connect with...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.1 is now available

Good to know. I have installed that app just in case I need it in the future. FWIW, I did a full reset on my router. After that I was able to upload the new release firmware. Then it took a while to manually configure all my settings. Glad I downloaded the VPN server cert stuff, that meant I...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.1 is now available

Problem: Unable to upgrade to 386.1 from 386.1_beta Disclaimer: I am new to this forum and am not sure of the local conventions with respect to if a new thread is warranted or I should add to this. Since I have seen at least one other similar post in this thread, I am guessing it okay here...
