Optional route switching with VPN Fusion on ASUS-WRT

I have an RT-AX3000 router in the US and an RT-AX82U router in the UK. I had them set up with each running an VPN client to the OpenVPN Cloud service on the web. Without any other configuration needed this enabled me to see all devices on both networks from both ends and it was working just...

Bi-directional VPN on ASUS routers set-up

Funnily enough I have configured both sites to the same cloud server to use it as client to client gateway and that does indeed enable me to access both networks from an OpenVPN client on my PC or phone. The documentation also seems to suggest it should work as a bi-directional VPN between sites...

Bi-directional VPN on ASUS routers set-up

Unfortunately I still haven't solved the technical problem but I have found another way to meet the essential 'user requirement' which is to have remote access over the internet to devices on a LAN which is behind a double NAT and has no static public IP address. I have achieved this by signing...

Bi-directional VPN on ASUS routers set-up

I just spotted one flaw in this plan. Merlin is not supported on RT-AX82U (my server router) but at least I can still do the first stage and migrate the RT-AX3000 client router (which is listed as supporting Merlin). And if that solves the problem stage 2 becomes unnecessary.

Bi-directional VPN on ASUS routers set-up

Thanks for your further thoughts. Funnily enough my original idea was to have two separate tunnels but this seemed to be thwarted by the fact that my current client router is behind a double-NAT and as I understand it this would require my ISP to either give me a public IP address or open ports...

Bi-directional VPN on ASUS routers set-up

Thanks again @eibgard. TBH I am amazed at your ability to switch between multiple threads at the same time and still maintain continuity of the context. And I am also extremely grateful for that. Just to confirm - based on your previous advice I did not opt for the username-as-common-name...

Bi-directional VPN on ASUS routers set-up

Server firewall and routing dumps attached. To the points you raised: 1. The router was bought from Amazon and the firmware version is 3.0.0.4.386_47029. So unless Merlin was pre-installed without me knowing prior to shipment then afaik I am running the stock ASUS firmware. tun15 was just what...

Thanks @eibgrad - attached file contains dumps of firewall and routing tables from the client router.

Bi-directional VPN on ASUS routers set-up

Thanks @eibgrad - sorry if it sounded like i was complaining. i didn't mean it to come across that way. I am truly appreciative of the help you are giving. I'm gathering the dumps you suggested. Just to check - do I need to try to a connection to capture the traffic in these dumps or are they...

Bi-directional VPN on ASUS routers set-up

OK - I'll try to grab that. In the meantime I tried disabling the firewall on the client router and had somebody try accessing devices via the tunnel again and still no change. That seems to suggest it isn't the firewall blocking.

Bi-directional VPN on ASUS routers set-up

That makes sense but I can't find the Inbound Firewall option in the router administration pages. Is that perhaps a Merlin option? I'm running ASUS stock firmware.

Bi-directional VPN on ASUS routers set-up

Thanks for confirming that a ping response validates the routing is correct, and for your suggestions to look into gateway and firewall configurations. One of the devices I asked my friend to access is the client ASUS router, the other device is an NVR for the security system. The client...

Bi-directional VPN on ASUS routers set-up

Thanks for your thoughts @eibgrad. I'll certainly be weighing up the pros and cons of both approaches if I have to do this again. In the meantime... It seems I was premature in saying all is working. Because I am physically located at the client site I cannot use a device which is directly...

Bi-directional VPN on ASUS routers set-up

I knew about the single certificate problem from the thread posted by @jsshapiro so I followed his instructions for generating unique certificates for each site. Sounds like "username-as-common-name" would have avoided the need for me to dive into the murky waters of Linux of which I have...

Bi-directional VPN on ASUS routers set-up

You are an absolute wizard! That was exactly the problem. I just corrected the Client-Specific Options for that client and have been able to ping a device on the client network. So I am truly happy to be proved wrong about the double NAT thing. Thanks again for your advice and guidance. It is...

Bi-directional VPN on ASUS routers set-up

Indeed - I have learnt that lesson from many times forgetting to do it. But I can confirm the client was correctly Added and Applied in the Manage Client-Specific Options section. I have since found out how to temporarily add the "missing" routing record to the routers routing table but it...

Bi-directional VPN on ASUS routers set-up

I just took a look at the routing table entries on both routers. On the client RT-AX3000 I see these entries relating to the OpenVPN routes: Destination Default Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Type Iface 10.8.0.0 10.8.0.5 255.255.255.0 UG 0 0 0 tun15 10.8.0.5 * 255.255.255.255...

Bi-directional VPN on ASUS routers set-up

Hi @elorimer - thanks for the suggestions. I confirm I already have 1, 2 and 4 set up as you describe. As per your item 3 I haven't seen "username-as-common-name" mentioned in other posts. What does it do?

Bi-directional VPN on ASUS routers set-up

I am trying to set up a bi-directional OpenVPN tunnel between two ASUS routers. RT-AX82U hosts the built-in ASUS-WRT OpenVPN server and RT-AX3000 hosts the built-in ASUS-WRT OpenVPN client. I have foillowed the instructions given in these two excellent posts to do this...
