AX86S - two different spec power adapters from two sealed routers. Only keeping one, but which PSU to choose?

Thanks a lot. Yes good advice booting the hub up ahead of the router as a general practice. Due to a bit of a lack of time at the moment, I will probably end up running the stock firmware for a week or two anyway, so that'll give me chance to do a bit of testing and see how it performs in daily...

AX86S - two different spec power adapters from two sealed routers. Only keeping one, but which PSU to choose?

Thanks for that! I actually did use the WPS method for a full factory reset after updating the firmware from stock last night, which I found via one of your posts on here. As I haven't changed anything much on the settings front, my likely next move is to get Merlin on there asap (as I need it...

AX86S - two different spec power adapters from two sealed routers. Only keeping one, but which PSU to choose?

Thanks. Well hopefully the process I went through last night has done the trick. I didn't leave the modem powered off though. I can easily power both down later in the evening for an hour or more if I experience issues, but I think it should be ok. Do you find during a reboot cycle, it is...

AX86S - two different spec power adapters from two sealed routers. Only keeping one, but which PSU to choose?

Thanks a lot. That was my plan - see how it goes over the coming days and tweak a small number of things at a time when necessary. Sometimes though there are one or two things which people recommend are changed out of the box - wasn't sure if that applied here. So far it seems fine for general...

AX86S - two different spec power adapters from two sealed routers. Only keeping one, but which PSU to choose?

Just want to let everyone know - because clearly the suspense is killing everyone on this exciting topic, that I decided to keep the 45w power brick :p Higher wattage/more headroom, more flexibility with placement, possibly better heat dissipation, wire is genuinely thicker/better quality (wart...

AX86S - two different spec power adapters from two sealed routers. Only keeping one, but which PSU to choose?

This is exactly my experience and feeling. I've never had an issue with returns and no questions ever asked. Almost every time they've issued refunds within an hour or so of Royal Mail receiving the scan. Often the same day I drop the parcel off at the post office, the refund is processed...

AX86S - two different spec power adapters from two sealed routers. Only keeping one, but which PSU to choose?

Thanks for the information and clarifying on this, makes sense. Appreciate it :) And thanks also for your input, that is very interesting. If the 45w is commonly shipped with the AX86U it makes sense to occasionally bundle the same one with the AX86S for stock availability/shortage reasons.

AX86S - two different spec power adapters from two sealed routers. Only keeping one, but which PSU to choose?

Thanks, I see. Yes understood both power supplies are fully compatible. It was just a case if the community generally would sway towards one or the other to help me decide which one to keep hold of. Apart from the right angled connector perhaps not being the most intuitive, I think the brick...

AX86S - two different spec power adapters from two sealed routers. Only keeping one, but which PSU to choose?

Thanks! As @Tech9 states, both adapters are original and ASUS supplied, so probably only point 4 could really apply here. ASUS seem to just ship out either of these adapters with the AX86S models. Either spec is 'compatible', on the back of the router it states 12V 3A / 19.5V 2.31A - so either...

AX86S - two different spec power adapters from two sealed routers. Only keeping one, but which PSU to choose?

Yes you raise a good point about the straight connector - when you plug the right angled one in, it's either in the way of the power switch, or you can see the cable 'from the side' of the router. The one goes straight back has no such problem. That doesn't bother me too much though, as I...

AX86S - two different spec power adapters from two sealed routers. Only keeping one, but which PSU to choose?

Yeah i'd need to measure the barrel size - for my implementation / use case I won't need to go down the PD route at this time, but it's good to know the option is there. For now, I can hide either a brick or wall wart without too much trouble in the location I plan to set it up.

AX86S - two different spec power adapters from two sealed routers. Only keeping one, but which PSU to choose?

Now that i've received a replacement, I will be returning the faulty/damaged router, complete with adapter and everything else. It's not even been set up. But it doesn't make any difference if I send back the wall wart type or the brick type with the damaged router. ASUS clearly ship out routers...

AX86S - two different spec power adapters from two sealed routers. Only keeping one, but which PSU to choose?

Thanks a lot for the information :) Yes true, both should work and it maybe doesn't matter too much - however from a specs point of view, I was curious if 19.5V/2.31A @ 45w (max) is seen as "more preferable" with these routers, vs. a 12V/3A one @ 36w. I think the idea of a separate brick is more...

AX86S - two different spec power adapters from two sealed routers. Only keeping one, but which PSU to choose?

Thanks! Yes, I was leaning towards the brick, because I think I prefer the right angled connector. The straight one really does poke out the back, although I suppose any ethernet cable I have plugged in will too. Also having the plug separate is possibly more flexible from a usage standpoint...

AX86S - two different spec power adapters from two sealed routers. Only keeping one, but which PSU to choose?

Just want to check something with you on this. You mentioned to keep hold of the 45w one (the brick PSU) because the extra amps are preferable - however it's the lower wattage 36w wall wart which is 3.0A / 12v. Whereas the 45w one is only 2.31A but 19.5v. So the 35w adapter is higher in terms...

AX86S - two different spec power adapters from two sealed routers. Only keeping one, but which PSU to choose?

Hi all! I recently picked up an RT-AX86S on Amazon Prime day (here in the UK). However, when it arrived, although the router works, there was something vibrating inside when you touch the bottom of the casing. It was almost as if one of the internal components was touching/rubbing against the...
