New router vs mesh vs extender for fios in apartment

So I guess I will see how the G1100 does. I'm assuming it won't be much better based on what I've read. At that point I would imagine it makes the most sense then to use the G1100/MI424 as router/AP and see how that does. If that fails then I'll have to decide on whether to get a new router...

New router vs mesh vs extender for fios in apartment

So I currently use the MI424wr in a 2 story 2 bed set up. My most used rooms are living room and bedroom. I am nothing doing anything stressful for the most part (web browsing and some video streaming). Of course if I place the router in the living room (where coax enters) I have issues...

Poor wifi signal in bedroom. Opinions on best options? Prices

So just so I can wrap my head around this a bit better I took my pc down to the AP and ran a speedtest. Once connected to the main router and once connected to the the AP. Speeds were much higher on the main router. If i understand right this is to be expected. However in the attached...

Poor wifi signal in bedroom. Opinions on best options? Prices

Well for now...it's working!!! I didn't have the STP box checked off next to AP. After watching someone trying to do the same as me on a youtube video I noticed they had theirs checked. So checked mine and (for now at least) voila!

Poor wifi signal in bedroom. Opinions on best options? Prices

Well tried putting no dns server and again no luck. Then when I went back in to the AP's router admin setting everything again defaulted back to "Use the following DNS server Addresses" and "DHCP server"

Poor wifi signal in bedroom. Opinions on best options? Prices

Could you elaborate on "For the WAN connection set it to automatic so it gets an IP from your primary router. For the LAN set its IP to static and assign it an IP. If your primary router is 192.168.1.1 then 192.168.1.2 would be a logical choice." Not exactly sure where I set the WAN...

Poor wifi signal in bedroom. Opinions on best options? Prices

So at this point I take the 2nd router and plug it into the coax at the other end of the house. Connect to its SSID from my iphone. No troubles. Try to pen a web page and speed test and it just hangs. Nothing works. On the physical 2nd router itself I see green lights for lan coax and lan...

Poor wifi signal in bedroom. Opinions on best options? Prices

So on to step 2.4 At this point (and here shows my lack of networking experience) I am hung up on the phrase "On the IP ADDRESS line, enter an available IP address on the same subnet as your primary router (e.g. 192.168.1.2)." I am not entirely sure what this means. As such I just follow the...

Poor wifi signal in bedroom. Opinions on best options? Prices

So as I can't figure out what wrong with that step I'll move on in the hopes that someone can chime in in the meantime. So on step 2.3 (on the second router) I run in to the following errors after hitting apply. DNS Servers: No DNS servers entered for this connection. This might cause name...

Poor wifi signal in bedroom. Opinions on best options? Prices

OK so first problem actually arises at step 2.1 with the following error after hitting apply. "The Device's IP address should not be in the range of the IP pool." This is after I tried inputting 192.168.1.10 as per the instructions.

Poor wifi signal in bedroom. Opinions on best options? Prices

OK so I sort of figured this out. However since my skills in tinkering with router setting aren't up to par I must have fudged something. So I have the primary router that connect via coax (split with the cable box). The secondary router I would also like to just connect via coax. My...

Poor wifi signal in bedroom. Opinions on best options? Prices

OK so I actually ended up finding an old verizon router (MI424 Rev F). I was wondering what I have to do t reconfigure it to use as an extender? The bedroom does have a coax from the ONT if that matters. Thanks

Poor wifi signal in bedroom. Opinions on best options? Prices

I have verizon fios. Router is at the back of my apartment on the 2nd floor (living room). My bedroom (where the poor signal is) is at the front of the apartment on the first floor. I spend a good amount of time in the bedroom watching videos and whatnot on my ipad and iphone. Trouble is I...

Getting verizon fios and I have some router questions

Thanks for the great replies everyone. Think I have a much better understanding of what's going on network wise now. I've always been the kind of person that needs to know the how and why to be satisfied. I appreciate it.

Getting verizon fios and I have some router questions

So I may be wrapping my head around this a bit more. My initial goal was to increase speeds (meaning downloading faster and quicker webpage browsing) on y network. Now I realize that by adding a gigabit switch this will NOT in fact increase those speeds as I am limited by my router being...

Getting verizon fios and I have some router questions

Just looking for some clarification/understanding. So if my router is limited to 10/100 what is the purpose of adding a gigabit switch? My understanding (which could very well be wrong) is that if the router is only 10/100 then adding a gigabit switch would still limit the speed to 10/100...

Getting verizon fios and I have some router questions

The NAS appears to have gigabit ethernet. (Data Transfer Rates 10 / 100 / 1000 Mbps). And yes the TV is 10/100. So just grab a cheap gigabit ethernet switch and hookup my NAS to it then right? The xbox and tv can go right to the router via ethernet cable. Still not entirely sure whether I...

Getting verizon fios and I have some router questions

So before I made the switch from comcast I was running some speedtests. My results were very inconsistent but I was able to get up to 35Mb/s downloads. That was with a draft N router. With verizon my results are much more consistent (almost exactly the smae every time) but I can't get above...
