New Around Here
Hi,

I am new to NAS but since I need to do something at home regarding storage I am looking at the different possibilities.

I have one main PC at home, one laptop and two mobile phones (Windows Phone & IOS) all with their own storage.
I am leaning towards a NAS for central storage. I understand that there are several ways to do so. One is using the NAS as a file server and access everything directly on the machine from laptop & computer or another way is through syncing the folders.

I am leaning towards the 214se since the low cost and excellent features but I am wondering if it has sufficient performance. I hope that people with some more experience can advice me.
I am a hobby photographer so I work with hundred of files of about 15 MB on a daily base.

Thanks for all help

If all NAS access is via wireless connections, NAS performance doesn't matter. All wireless connection methods are slower than even the cheapest NASes.

The main PC, where all the photography work is done, is connected directly on the same Wifi router than the NAS through ethernet connection.

The question remains offcourse: would the 214se be sufficient in performance? :)

I'd say yes. My DS212 is faster than the 212j, but not as fast as others. Total non-issue for me as I rarely do anything that uses a lot of CPU time. Just NAS shares and transfers and so on are I/O bound and don't use much CPU. So for most use cases I'd say don't overspend for CPU speed. But spend a bit more for the 4 year horizon - which is why I didn't get the DS212j.
