Should I just let the router update itself then load merlin? Thought i read something about the ac68u losing aimesh with a stock update

You need an intermediate fw before going to 384 version if coming from 376
Flash with 378.55 before and 384 after

* Edit:There is no AImesh in Merlin firmwares. This function is removed by Rmerlin
If you need Aimesh, its only available with stock fw.

I’m not totally clear about your question but to be specific, aimesh is a feature of the only the asus firmware - if you load Merlin, you will lose aimesh.

or if you mean you got a converted TM-AC1900 router, they wont be supported by asus (without tricks).

It was indeed a TM-ac19000. I've loaded 378 then 384 versions of merlin with no issue. Just had this feeling I was forgetting something important when it was time to edit the cfe
