Finally received the replacement and they sent a used router. I tried to register a DDNS and but the router is already registered to someone else and I cannot use the same DDNS that I used before.

No, that is not the issue.

You should have first removed the DDNS that you had on your original router. Then you can use it on another one again.

There is no option to unregister but I guess you have to create another ddns or something like that.

Yes, that is what you need to do. A bit confusing (easy for Asus to fix it with an '-' in front or at least explain it clearly for users). :)

My good friend had bought the 87U last year and was very happy with the purchase. I was impressed with his router so
I bought an 87U a little after but I had similar problems as I read in the forums.
My 5ghz would work great for one day and then crap out.
I put Merlin, ASUS, firmware but it didn't help.
I would connect to a computer via remote desktop and it would drop connection and reconnect.
I returned it before the 30 days period to best buy because in my opinion it was a lemon. I continued using the 66u.
2 months ago I bought it again because my friends router 87u was still working great.
and I liked the features it had which where better then my 66u
better antenna power and faster VPN speeds etc. I wanted to get the 88U but I read tons of problems with that one as well so I said let me try it again I don't have anything to lose expect returning it for a refund.
This new 87u gave me no problems. Its working great with no issues.
I think either they had problems with their first versions which later on got fixed and if someone is buying a new 87U they should check the date it was build.
It doesn't make sense that some 87u work great and others are lemons.
I even bought one for my brother 3 weeks ago and its working flawlessly.
I abuse my 87U with all kinds of its features on, including VPN client, server, FTP, Media Center, NAS etc.
Before I updated to the new firmware from Merlin I had it running for 45 days without a hick-up.
its sad that people are knocking down these models because if you have a good one its actually an amazing router.
I hope ASUS fixes these issues because they make great routers although it seems many of them are defective.
Perhaps this is due to bad Quality Inspection.
I saw some pictures where heat syncs where not on properly, this is not right people should not be getting lemons that they are stuck with
and have to wait for it to maybe be fixed.
I urge anyone who buys a 87U to fully test it the first couple of weeks and if they have the smallest problem return it and get another one from another store until
you get one that works. If a router is a lemon you will know it right away in the first week.
There is no reason to fiddle around with new firmware and and rebooting and shutting down.
The router should work properly right out of the box.

Wireless AC has now failed on the replacement and I didn't even use port 1. It took just 2 months to fail. This router is a joke.

I'm sorry to hear that, unfortunately it is what it is, i reported this situation since the beginning on this specific model and i've seen some users discrediting it and insist that this was not true, telling "its not because your's failed that a problem exists with the RT-AC87U", "my RT-AC87U is working fine" sure it always works fine until it decides to fail, i even remember the hillarious @got_milk post "its your FW fault" and alot more others...

At that time at least more than 20 RT-AC87U RMA's happened in front of my eyes and always with the same issue (QTN Radio and Port1 not working) i cannot tell the number now, i simply stop counting them, also an IT store representative confirmed this situation and even stop selling them, since then i realised that something really wrong was happening with RT-AC87U model and now like anyone can see based on the several users reports plaguing the forums on this issue, it proofs that is still happening and that's a real fact, not a myth.

PS: If it fails again the 3rd time you will get refunded.

Get a RT-AC68U/P or RT-AC88U if you have the extra money.

I've always wondered on the 87U's that "die" if the QTN is stuck in the bootloader waiting for something - the bootstrap process on this device is very different than the other models - I don't have access to any 87U's, but someone with technical skills and a JTAG might consider observing what is happening on the failed devices..

Theres no JTAG software supporting it, also no one will do it on warranty period (3 years) at the current date theres no RT-AC87U out of warranty, so i don't see any good reason for someone opening it and loose $200/250€ just to satisfy own curiosity, which by the way will get you nowhere. RMA it's the way, IMO it seems to me a job for ASUS to solve, not users.

I have AC87U and I had a lot of problems with it many months after the buying time but I found a fork :) that solved all my problems after a very clean install. I'm boiling waiting for the new version, hgg
