is .11a worth enabling, or just stick with n and ac? Is there some obvious reason to avoid it that a noob doesn’t know about?

Since it’s 5ghz thought it might be worth keeping.

11a clients are few and far between these days...

that being said - no harm in keeping the 5GHz radio in mixed 11a/n/ac mode...
 
Take what I say with a grain of salt as I have no real technical background but it is my opinion that there is usually a bit of a penalty that goes along with being backwards compatible.

Couple that with "a" being pretty much obsolete. I mean how many years have home users run on single band (2.4 GHz) b/g routers without a single "gee, really wish I had 'a' " complaint? Now that we home users finally have dual band with 5 GHz (for n/ac) why even bother to think about "a"?

in 5GHz, much less impact with the legacy stations compared to 2.4GHz, where an 11b client can really hurt things...
