Are there any settings that should maybe be changed on my clients wireless adapter's advanced settings to get higher throughput? I find lots of information here for the wireless routers, but not finding much for the client side of things here or with search the web.
 
I'd say first make sure that you have the latest driver for your wireless adapter.

only one I can think of is...
If your WiFi router or access point supports 40MHz mode, your client may have an option for 40MHz enable. Most do not. And often, 40MHz mode doesn't work well or at all due to interference and non-11n devices, etc.

Otherwise, that's all I can think of.
