AC-87U Constant Wireless Issues

Hello,

So I am at cross roads on deciding if I should just return the AC-87U and try something different (WRT1900AC) instead. I seem to be having issues with wireless that I just canno't track down.

I am connecting to wireless fine (both 2.4ghz & 5ghz) but what I am finding is that often when I load a web page it will work fine, then when I click something within the web page (a link) the browser just starts to spin and if I click it again a second later I can get through.

This is happening across a range of devices (iMac, MacBook, iPhone, iPad, Surface Pro 3).

I've tried various firmwares (inc merlin) and I have reset to factory I don't know how many times!

At this point I just don't know which way to turn.

Hello,

Okay so I decided after some research to re-flash the router with merlin build 3.0.0.4.376.48_1. After I did that I reset to factory and then cleared NVRAM (held WPS button while turning router on).

I have setup the basic wireless and so far it seems to be much better.

Probably down to the fact I wasn't clearing the NVRAM last time, I was doing a factory reset from the GUI which I understand doesn't properly clear NVRAM.

So the issue is still present. Not as bad it was before though but I am still seeing pages just spinning.

Okay so I have bitten the bullet and returned my RT-AC87U, swapped it for a WRT1900AC.

Hope things will be better, sorry ASUS.

Probably HW problem on your router, i don't have any problems here. AC87U it's better than WRT1900AC IMO.

Your probably right mate but I honestly don't have time to hope that I will get a good unit, or to mess around with firmware any longer to get a stable connection.

The ASUS RT-AC87U is a lovely router and it may indeed be be better than the WRT1900AC, and yes I may have problems with that but its the chance I need to take.

SO! I have to laugh at myself sometimes. When I was having these issues with the RT-AC87U I initially troubleshooted the problem myself and all my knowledge was telling me it couldn't be the router, so I contacted my ISP and they come back and say everything is fine (this was going on for around 4 days).

At this point I had enough and returned the router today and took delivery of the WRT1900AC. So after then experiencing the SAME behaviour as the ASUS I pushed to be put through to higher support at the ISP and only to find out there is a known core network issue causing this.

Incidentally i've had two three issues with the new router (1st) it didn't come with a UK plug (Euro only) and (2nd) I am discovering the support for opensource on this router isn't as established as I thought and (3rd) its dropped wireless so far (totally disappeared).

So I am back to should I attempt a RMA for the WRT1900AC and get the ASUS RT-87U back!

See now you can see why I laugh at myself with the situations I get into.
