AC56U problem

New Around Here
Hi guys,

I just recently bought an AC56u from amazon and was able to hook it to our modem and share internet. 5 mins later I removed the power plug to transfer the router to its permanent location but when I turned it on, I was not able to see any wifi signal.

The power LED blinks quickly now 5 mins after switching on the router and stays that way for good. I did some research but am unable to reset the router using the reset button of the WPS 30/30/30 method. When I hook it up via Ethernet, I am unable to get a 192.168.x.x address; only 169.258 shows up.

I am desperate to have this fixed because I am overseas and retuning it would be very tough. Hope someone can show me how to fix this.

Thanks

Flashing power LED usually means the router is in recovery mode. Set a computer with a static IP within the same subnet (192.168.1.100 if you still have the router on 192.168.1.1), then access the router's mini web interface at 192.168.1.1 (or whichever IP you assigned to your router). From there, provide it with a .trx firmware file (meaning make sure you unzip it first).

The firmware can be downloaded from Asus's support site.

Note: the reset button puts the router in recovery mode when used at power up, it does not reset its settings.

Thanks for the response RMerlin

The LED light is blinking rapidly, based on the numerous threads I have read, it should be blinking slowly to indicate that it's in recovery mode.

Nevertheless, I have tried the firmware upload tool provided by Asus but am still unable to fix it. After counting for more than 30 seconds, it just says that the router is not in recovery or rescue mode when i upload the latest .trx firmware file I have downloaded from the ASUS website. I have set the LAN IPv4 settings on my computer to:

IP address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0 (this is set by default)
Default gateway: 192.168.1.1

I am still unable to both ping 192.168.1.1 and access the mini web interface. Hope I'm just doing it wrong and that there's a way to restore the firmware. It's so sad that this conked out despite using it correctly.

This will reset your router back to default.
I
Turn the router off, hold the wps button and turn on the router. Keep holding wps button till the power light is blinking fast. Let go of the wps. Let the router boot for a min.
Log in to router as you did when you initially set it up.
If any lights are still blinking and you cant logg in to it, return the router back from where you bought it.

P.S.

30/30/30 method Does NOT work on these routers.

Should I expect the router to behave differently when I let go of the WPS button?

Just to clarify:

1.) turn off router
2.) hold WPS button
3.) turn on router while holding WPS button
4.) wait for 5 secs until the power light switches from being steady to blinking fast
5.) release the WPS button
6.) try to ping 192.168.1.1?

Do i need to configure the LAN settings of my PC to a static IP or should I put everything in automatic?

I would like to avoid the return route since I ordered this from the US and I am currently overseas.

Thank you!

4. Count till 10 even if power light is flashing.
5. Release wps and Wait 1 min.
6. Log in to router with 192.168.1.1

Lan settings should be auto as if you just bought a new router.

Still won't work. :(

Power LED is still blinking

Unplug it for 20min and let it sit.

You can keep trying over and over with different ways of resetting it and try get in to recovery mode to flash the firmware.

But for a new router just to fail for no reason, is a good indication that it will have to be exchanged.
