New Around Here
I have a WDC 4TB 3.0 HD connect to my AC68U using firmware .583 (rollbacked a week ago) and the HD connect continues to spin without anything accessing it. I use the connected HD as a media player and its has several WDC media players accessing the movies on the drive. However, I monitor the drive over the past two days and nothing is accessing the drive because everything is turned off and the drive continues to spin. I'm for sure the drive went into sleep mode in the past but now it does not. Anyone have any idea what may have happen or what to do?

By the way I unmounted the drive and reconnected and the problem continues.

Thanks for assistance.

Hello All,

My drive continues to spin or less say it sounds as its being access and I have shut down Samba share, etc. It started a couple of days ago. So I finally did a scan using utility in router config and have enclosed for all to see.

/dev/sda1: 4K sector size
GetMount(/proc/mounts): "/dev/sda1"
GetMount(/proc/mounts): "/dev/sda1" is not mounted
GetMount(/etc/mtab): "/dev/sda1"
GetMount(/etc/mtab): "/dev/sda1" is not mounted
NTFS quick check: seems to be consistent
chkntfs returns 0

Again not sure what this means.

You said the drive would spin down previously. Was this during a period when you were using another firmware other than 583? You mentioned you rolled back recently, and now this problem is happening.

I am not by my router at the moment, but I recall there is a setting to adjust the properties of when to spin down an attached hard drive. I am not sure if this is exclusive to Merlin's firmware only.

Fortunately for me, I haven't had to deal with this because the drive I have attached to my router is an old SSD.

Perhaps someone else can chime in and confirm where the setting is to adjust the spin down settings. If I can find a moment to connect to my network remotely, I will respond back and let you know.

And since this question will come up, is there any reason why you aren't on any of Merlin's firmware builds?

I was right, it is exclusive to Merlin's firmware.

Tools > Other Settings > Miscellaneous Options

The setting you want to change is:

Disk spindown idle time (in seconds)

If you plan to stay on stock firmware, then this may be an issue that ASUS would have to try and remedy (if they haven't already).

Good luck!

IanEnc,

I'm on ASUS 583 for now and what I did before I read your reply was turnoff DLNA and disable share and turn it back on. Now the drive WDC drive is in standby mode and I know this because the LED is blinking like it suppose to. I'm suspicious my drive was being accessed of some kind. Anyway I might look into the Merlin firmware that has the feature you mention.

By the way do you know which Merline firmware is stable and does not have the rebooting problems like Asus 4561?

Thanks again for the assist.

The most stable RMerlin firmware for the RT-AC68U right now is the 374.40 alpha4 build.
