AC68U configuration as "just a gateway"

0xdeadbeef

New Around Here
So after lurking here for a little while, I pulled the trigger on an AC68U, received it today, and immediately installed Merlin (and am on 378.53). I am supremely impressed with the features and power of the device so far.

One issue I did have that has caused an afternoon of headaches is how to configure it to basically only be a VPN gateway. I already have a router connected to my WAN that I use (192.168.1.1), and am not looking to replace that. On DD-WRT builds on other devices I've done, what I'm looking to have done just seems to work out of the box, but I have not been quite able to achieve what I'm looking for on this yet - which is to have a single ethernet connection connected in port 1, a static internal IP, an OpenVPN client and a route to go out through my WAN/LAN gateway. With this setup, I can point any other device through this and go out through a VPN, but if I want to get faster speeds and don't care about the traffic I'm sending, just set the gateway as the LAN/WAN one (192.168.1.1).

I first noticed a problem when I was trying to set up OpenVPN and it couldn't resolve the hostname from my .ovpn file (as seen in the logs) - then I tried to ping 8.8.8.8 from network tools and got a network unreachable! So then I played around with the WAN settings to static IP and set the gateway/DNS as (didn't work) and the operation mode as an Access Point which caused some bizarre effects like the Asus all of the sudden answering for 192.168.1.1 even though I had given it an IP of 192.168.1.40.

I'm feeling kind of retarded here and am hoping it's just some dumb thing I've overlooked. Any assistance would be appreciated.

I haven't gotten any replies yet, so I was afraid my scenario was too complex - how about this: how can I simply configure this router to set another router's IP inside my network as the gateway and DNS?

Have you looked at the setting under LAN > DHCP Server?
There you can set a default gateway and DNS servers for the clients (I have not tested it myself though).

Hello, and thanks for your response! Unfortunately, I am not looking to set the clients' DNS/Gateway settings, and in fact, my DHCP server is turned off. I'm looking to modify these settings for the router itself.
