Access point with DHCP

Hi all,

I have a RT-AC68U and I'd like to configure it as an access point, but I want to keep DHCP working. Currently I have it setup as router mode, disabling WAN access. It mostly works, except for DNS: I have to disable the DNS in dnsmasq (only keeping my other router in the DHCP option), otherwise resolution is redirected to a fixed address (because of wanduck if I understood correcly).

Is there a more optimal configuration than what I did? Mostly I'd like be able to workaround weird wanduck behavior.

re wanduck I assume you mean the wan down browser redirect? That uses iptables not dns redirect - and is controllable by web gui

Administration->system->Enable WAN down browser redirect notice Yes No

I have it turned off because I don't have the web gui on port 80 so the diverts are also broken!

We need a lot more information on your desired configuration.

Normally an Access Point is connected to a network which already has DHCP running. A second DHCP on the same network only causes problems. Access Point mode is one of the factory configured modes that you can select from the Asus administration page and does nice things like change the WAN port into a 5th LAN port for you.

You said set up as a router, but WAN disabled. That sounds like your following a script to convert a older router (without the option of switching to a factory configured Access Point) to an Access Point. I am almost certain those instructions will be telling you to turn off DHCP.

Thanks, it seems to do the trick! I thought wan being down would mean that setting didn't matter, but it does make the DNS resolution works fine. Now I just need to configure dnsmasq a bit.

I have another router, which is my gateway. For various reason I can't remove it easily from my setup, but I want to disable its DHCP because it's hard to configure (shirtty proprietary device from my ISP).

So currently I have: 192.168.1.1: my gateway, 192.168.1.254: my Asus router, serving as DHCP for 192.168.1.10-100, declaring 1.1 as gateway and declaring both 1.1 and 1.254 as DNS. It mostly works now, but I have to do several things manually, so I wondered if I could improve the whole setup.
