accessing AP though gateway via VPN

Excellent. Thanks for the feedback. I wouldn't have thought such a thing would matter, for what you were doing, for, as you said, the AP showed up on your client list. Another lesson learned.

Anyway, you might want to play with the local port forwarding in Putty as a welcome distraction from the tv over new year's day.

yes...looks interesting...theres so much this firmware can do that i know little about

Just prodding around the AP..i notice that the client list shows everyone that connected wirelessly to the gateway but reports them as being wired...what would i need to do to have the AP pick up the names i set for attached known devices
