I have just received my China unit AC86U. I noticed that after flashing with asuswrt-merlin and changing to English language, it will revert back to a Chinese QIS setup page after factory reset. Is there anything I can do for the default QIS setup page to be in English instead?

yes, you could load old firmware. Mine came with RT-AC86U_3.0.0.4_382_15098.w and had ALL languages on very first page to choose.
Later firmwares forgot about that and you have to do initial pages in chinese.
And latest firm even forgot ALL languages, only chinese and english left ...

So what you’re saying is to load old firmware first? Then only flash latest merlin firmware again?

no, its just dependent on firmware used which languages are available or changeable on first setup page.
with old firm you see they did better in the past, but dont want to anymore ...

I see, so I guess I'll just have to memorize how to go through the QIS page in Chinese if I ever need to do a factory reset.

use your mobile as translator or remember what they asking, maybe more often changing with each firmware.
first page is mode, one page is User/PW/PW another SSID-2G/PW/SSID-5G/PW with copy 2 to 5G clickbox.
but you could directly jump in settings where you instant can change language with: 192.168.50.1/index.asp
