AIMesh between AC and AX?

I have a AC86u already on merlin firmware. Although, it works fine the 5 Ghz band does not reach many parts of the 3 story house. I am thinking of getting another with hardline backhaul to use in a AIMesh setup. My question is if the AX models will work with AC86u? They seem to be the same price and while I don't have any AX devices I was thinking might as well get that for future. AI Mesh would only be for AC band and not AX since obviously AC86u can't extend AX. I was thinking AX56u or AX3000. So, will this work? any recommendations or gotchas with the setup/merlin firmware?

AX models will be fine, they will simply use AC when connecting to your primary.
