Hey all,

I recently added a GT-AC5300 to my house which has an RT-AC5300 and AC66U B1. They're all acting in an AiMesh setup, connected via ethernet, using SmartConnect (I know this in itself may be problematic too).

More often than not, everything works great. Yet, every now and then, shirt goes crazy. Sometimes devices won't connect (more specifically, an original Amazon Echo and a WeMo outlet), entire system goes down (can't connect to the source router), devices connect to the wrong node, and I guess just some random instability.

Frustration is high. I'm torn if I should return this GT-AC5300 before my window is up or go with something like Velop or Lyra? I know there's a lot of variables, but I guess I'm not yet certain on if others are having issues with AiMesh and if it's worth hanging onto. Reality is, I like ASUS routers, been using them for years. Love the interface and don't want to give it up. Yet, the amount of hours and frustration I'm exerting, simply isn't worth it.

Any feedback is most welcome.

Thanks

Random thought.... have you tried disabling the third band on the 5300?

I have not, not a bad idea.

My return window expires this week, while I am on the road for work. Just having a hard time deciding.

I dropped $300 on this second 5300 and can get a 3 pack of Velop (refurbished) for the same. Struggling to decide which route is best.

i have 5300, 86u ,68u and 1900p
no luck with AiMesh setup, connected via Ethernet

i tried to use every one to as main router and Ethernet connected node and keeps dropping
disabling the third band on the 5300 makes no difference .. (I'm not using SmartConnect)

For Ethernet
connected router i have to use AP mode just set same SSID names ...

ASUS specifies the 5300U (w/Range Boost) for a 'very large home' and the 86U (w/Range Boost) for a 'very large home' and the 68U for a 'large home'.

For me, the sweet spot is a 2x86U AiMesh... the house router covers three 1600 sq. ft. levels plus deck; the garage node covers 1700 sq. ft. plus deck.

I have an 86U as my main router and RT-68U and Netgear routers setup as access points via ethernet back to the 86U. I have each of these set to different frequencies of 2.4 and 5 GHz and use the same SSID (SSID_2G, SSID_5G) for all of them. There is only one guest network which is from the 86U.

Our home is about 5,600 square feet and we have the 86U in the lower level wiring room, the 68U on the main floor on one side of the house and the Netgear on the upper level on the other side of the house.

We've done this for two months now and it works perfectly for us - the kids never complain about "bad" wifi anymore. I'm running Merlin's latest firmware (no Ai mesh).

I've almost 10000 sq ft covered on two flates. One GT AC-5300 as main router, one RT-5300 as AP and 4 RT-68U as AP. All on the same SSID. No Aimesh and things work great. WIFI calling and max out on Fiber 100/100 mbs is awsome. Did try out the Aimesh but had only issues. This setup is greate. Daily download is allmost 80 Gb of data. Reboot all the devices each night and no problems at all. :)

if u have same ssid for Ap`s and router ( of course on different channel), will the client devices connect to the AP when they are close to the AP ?
i tried the same route but none of my clients connect to access point, but they connect to router directly

why ( of course on different channel) ? mesh (Aimesh) , WiFi Repeaters normally use same channel... same ssid= same channel ...
