I searched the threads but couldn't find anything definitive, is there a solution for this? My phone literally drains about 5x faster than normal while on wifi.

I tried the latest firmware and even back rev'd one and it's happening on both.

Is there a setting I can change as a work around? like DTIM Interval or Beacon Interval?

What have you guys had success with?

It's so bad on mine I can't even get the phone to charge while connected on wifi, it drains faster than it charges! Disable wifi or leave home and it's fine.

your router is ?

If you are asking about settings on your phone go into settings and minimize the applications that can automatically update. This includes e-mail. Don't allow it to update continuously.

Also when you are in an area where there are no networks you can or want to connect to disable WiFi on your phone as it expends a lot of energy seeking out networks.

I only have the drain issue using wifi on my router, all else are fine. Many revs ago I didn't have this issue but since updating the firmware it's back...

Wifi power management was broken for a long time on the RT-AC87U's 5 GHz interface. People are reporting that it was finally fixed in recent firmware releases. Go to Asus's website and download the latest firmware for your router.

I have 5G disabled on the router because it works very poorly. I'm using 2.4G only.
I tried 380_2695 which was beta at the time, then back down to 378_9529, same issue on both. I think the one I had a while back without the problem was 378_9177.

I've had the same issue while running the latest XVortex (MerlinWRT for other than ASUS routers). Went back to .58 and while it was better, it can't compete with Tomato. On Tomato I can easily do 4 days with moderate usage. Was never able to achieve this while on XVortex

The notes for 380_3459 don't mention anything about a wifi fix. Looks like just one update to a GUI issue. Is this not all? Are there other things included which are not listed?

Asus often only lists the most important fixes.

Does the AC68u have this issue on your latest release (380.59) it is chewing through my battery at 10% an hour on wifi, 4x faster than on 4g and I don't know how to stop it :(

Wonder if there is some Android app update that is causing some issues - as the 87U had some issues with power management due to the Quantenna firmware, but this was more than just Android, iPhone's were also impacted...

Dunno, I have turned off auto update for apps so I will see if it plummets now it's back on wifi. Thanks.

The problem was specific to the RT-AC87U.

No wonder why I am the only one complaining about my previous Samsung Galaxy S7's poor battery life. WiFi is always on but man I would like charge my phone to 100%, all apps background refresh = off, doze mode on for all apps, yet the battery would drain to 80% in an hour even if I don't touch the phone. So I sold the phone thinking it was a problem with all Samsung phones as this was the same experience I had on my Galaxy S6 edge+ and Nexus 6P.

with my current iPhone SE, even if WiFi is on, I would not lose any battery in 2 hours.... now that you made this thread, it all makes sense as I've always had ASUS routers only. Previously it was on the AC68U and now on an AC5300

The 87U is the red headed step child of the Asus router line.
sorry English is not my native language, what does read headed child mean? like something odd?

I have the same problem with my iPhone. Have you solved battery drain with 378_9177?
And i have the 380_3459, i got an error during downgrade, while i upload the firmware to the router.
"Firmware upgrade unsuccessful. This may result from incorrect image or error transmission. Please check the version of firmware and try again."
