I'm still waiting for the support of Merlin on this router. It has very nice appearance, especially the Gundam version

It may be pretty, but it looks like the RT-AX58U (spec-wise).

Doesn't look like an exceptional model to me.

A chinese website has a hack to make the ax3000 become an ax5400. Potentially making the rt-ax82u obslete. I won't offer the link or have my post removed. Just FYI.

Sounds like a stretch, no? How can an RT-AX58U/RT-AX3000 grow two additional antennae, for one?

Yes, they just removed the AX58U software lock. There is an AC86U firmware with 160MHz support as well. ;)

No guts to try it out, found the webpage. What do you think? Does it work? Is it really just a software limitation from ASUS?

Since both routers use the same hardware with the same FCC ID certification - it is software limitation. Does it work and how stable it is - I don't know. You can try and see for yourself. Since this is not official nor approved firmware, you'll have to deal with eventual issues yourself or contact the firmware author for further assistance. The router is yours and you can run iOS on it, if you find a way to do it. No one here on SNB can help you though.

This is from GNUton's twitter account. He has rmerlin's 386-4 alpha build. Will it be downloadable anytime soon? Link:

I have RT-AC86 converted to GT-AC2900
there are hardware differences, there are software limitations

the asus company differentiates models according to technical capabilities, this is true

It is possible to convert the AX 58 into another model, but there are also special restrictions

about ah 58 it is reliably known that there is a software limitation 2x4:2

Wondering with the recent GPL fixes if the AX82 will get any support from merlin... I recently exchanged my AX58 for the AX82

Post 2 still applies.

Cool so what part of Post 2 are you referring to? Since it ticks every box except the parts about Merlin having them and/or wanting to support it, which there is no way I would know without him saying so.

So don't ask if/when a new model will be supported. I cannot speculate about future model support, and until I have working support for a model, I cannot answer that question.

Cool? :)

Merlin's posts says " don't ask ".

If you read a bit closer there is this in the pipeline :

AX82 firmware
