Any issue with VPN under 376.44?

New Around Here
Hi,

I'm new here and also new to the Asuswrt-Merlin and the ASUS AC87 router. I've been trying to get VPN running but have not been able to get my iphone to connect successfully. Are there any known issue that I need to watch for?

Followed basic FAQ found on ASUS website to set it up but getting the following error logged:

Aug 6 00:04:51 pptpd[5874]: CTRL: Client 166.205.XXX.XXX control connection started
Aug 6 00:04:52 pptpd[5874]: CTRL: Starting call (launching pppd, opening GRE)
Aug 6 00:04:52 pptp[5875]: Plugin pptp.so loaded.
Aug 6 00:04:52 pptp[5875]: PPTP plugin version 0.8.5 compiled for pppd-2.4.5, linux-2.6.36.4
Aug 6 00:04:52 pptp[5875]: pppd 2.4.5 started by admin, uid 0
Aug 6 00:04:52 pptp[5875]: Using interface ppp10
Aug 6 00:04:52 pptp[5875]: Connect: ppp10 <--> pptp (166.205.XXX.XXX)
Aug 6 00:04:52 pptp[5875]: peer refused to authenticate: terminating link
Aug 6 00:04:52 pptpd[5874]: CTRL: EOF or bad error reading ctrl packet length.
Aug 6 00:04:52 pptpd[5874]: CTRL: couldn't read packet header (exit)
Aug 6 00:04:52 pptpd[5874]: CTRL: CTRL read failed
Aug 6 00:04:52 pptpd[5874]: CTRL: Client pppd TERM sending
Aug 6 00:04:52 pptpd[5874]: CTRL: Client pppd finish wait
Aug 6 00:04:52 pptp[5875]: Terminating on signal 15

Things of interest on the router:
VPN STATUS on the router shows 2 VPN Server running
- PPTP VPN Server - Running
- OpenVPN Server 1 - Running

Not sure where the OpenVNP Server came from but I believe it was there when I upgraded to this version of the firmware.

Router has the following setup:

VPN in enabled
Server mode is PPTP
Network Place (Samba) Support is set to No
UserName/Password has been set
Broadcast Support is set to Two-way
Authentication is set to Auto
MPPE Encryption is set to 128
Client IP has been set and does not have overlap with IPs set for DHCP
DDNS has been set

The iphone's VPN setup is:
PPTP
Server points to DDNS (I've also tried using IP but get the same error)
RSA SecurID is disabled
Account and Password match VPN server's
Encryption Level is set to Auto
Send All Traffic is enabled

Anyone had better luck? Any idea why AC87 shows two VPN instances running?

Appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Thanks.
Michel

Try setting Authentication to mschap-v2 for the VPN server and Encryption to 128 for the client and connect again. As for the running OpenVPN instance, you can disable it under the VPN Server tab.

No luck with turning off the OpenVPN instance. Under the Server Tab, I only have one selection of "Enable VPN Server". Turning that off, only turns off the PPTP VPN Server that I've tried setting up. The OpenVPN Server1 instance is still up and running, with an last update time of earlier this morning.

the iphone does not have a Encryption option of "128" but "Maximum" and "None". I've tried both with the same failure. I've also tried setting the Authentication to mschap-v2 on the router, no difference. The error looks the same, "peer refused to authenticate: terminating link".

You have to select "OpenVPN" first, apply, then turn it off, and apply again.

Thanks for the helpful pointer. :)

Only one instance of VPN running now. I've tried all different permutation with the options on the router and the iphone and still no luck. Same error log:

I'll try it again tomorrow with another client, Win 8.1 and see if there's a problem there too.

Thanks again,
Michel

Looks like it was something in particular with my iphone's VPN setup. I was able to get it running on Windows 8.1, OS X - 10.9.4, and on a Ipad Air with the same IOS version. Decided to wipe all VPN settings on the iphone and start fresh and voila. Everything now works.

I appreciate the help.

Michel
